Why is it that the fares out of SAT and AUS are so different ?

Example on AA using the same dates on the routes I travel on most often.

AUS - EWR : $278
SAT - EWR : $298
SAT - CID : $288
AUS - CID : $440

I don't understand how this works because both airports have the same airlines except for :
AUS has B6.
SAT has Aerolittoral, Mexicana and Midwest.
Both have WN so what gives ?

MSP-AUS is always a lot higher than MSP-SAT. I can't figure out why it's so damned expensive to fly to AUS.

I've rarely seen them off by very much whenever check the "nearby airports" box. Doesn't seem worth it to add an extra hour or more of driving each way to the mix when I have a perfectly decent airport right here in SAT. I mean, you may think you can 'save' a hundred dollars or more on a domestic flight but you have to drive to the other aiport and park your car in the garage or something and probably piss away all your savings in the process. I've parked at the airport before, and I'd personally rather just have a taxi drop me off right at the check-in curb and walk right up to the security line instead of praying for a vacant parking spot on the last level of the garage fifteen minutes before boarding begins.
