Why Isn't Copa A SkyTeam Member?

I've been planning a trip to several countries of Central and South America, and it bugs me to find an almost inexistent presence of SkyTeam... Why is it that, sharing CO's reservations system, FF program, most service standards, etc... Copa Airlines does not belong to the SkyTeam alliance?

I believe CM's network would do wonders for the alliance in the Americas...

Is there a firm date for the entry of the new associate members?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I am confused about "associate members" of SkyTeam... Actually, have never heard the term. I assume these are different from members such as SU, AM, CO, KL, AF, etc...

I wish I could accrue DL MQM SkyMiles on my CM flights!!

The Skyteam Associate membership is explained in the link below:

Thanks Srbmod for providing the link! Even when it contains plenty of information, it indeed fails to give a date when will Copa (or any other prospective associates Air Europa, Kenya Airways and Tarom) will become Associate members.

Am I right if i assume that by "adopting the frequent flyer program of one of the Memeber airlines" (one would assume of the sponsor Member airline) flying in associate members' flights would count towards accrual of full-right miles (such as DL Medallion Qualification Miles or MQM), just as it happens when flying Aeroflot, AerMexico, Air France, Alitalia, Continental, CSA, Delta, KLM, Korean and Northwest?

The release says little about the differences.

So what's the difference? Why would one become an associate member and not a member? What are the costs and benefits? Do associate members eventually become members? What's the point?

Any responses appreciated.

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

Associate members presumably have different "voting rights" when it comes to major decisions. But I also remember reading that the associates will not have their own FF programs. I do not know how true that is.

China Southern has had ST membership in the works for almost 2 years, but have still not gained membership. Nobody on this board knows why the delays!

Right, the associates will use the sponsoring member's FFP. By way of example, UX will use Flying Blue and CM will use OnePass (well, they already do, so integration in their case should be easier).

As for China Southern, I believe they will be full members but I do agree with you that it is taking too long. Now that Star is adding Shanghai Airlines and Air China, SkyTeam needs to be quick about China Southern's entry.

So the downside is that associate members don't have voting rights. Why would they agree to this? Why not become a member with full voting rights? Is it cheaper for them in some way? What's the other side of the coin?

I guess the "big" members do not want Copa, Air Europa, Tarom and Kenya Airways to make noise and, eventually, oppose their desires.

Right on, Skyteam.com gives little definition to what an associate member really is other than it being sponsored from a full member.

Further, I can't confirm that associate members extend all benefits, namely FF mileage!!!
