Pre-deregulation Route Systems

Before deregulation hit the US's airline industry routes and prices were strictly controlled. And to get from Tucson to Bangor, Maine most likely could not have been accomplished on one airline. So my question to you is what did the major airlines route structures look like? I imagine they would have been more point to point, and which airline had the most extensive domestic US system... I am guessing either TWA or United on this one.

Not being old enough to remember the good old days, I don't really know for sure...but I remember reading somewhere that National (the old one) was pretty big before it got gobbled up by Pan Am. Braniff was pretty big too, I think.

For the most part everything was point to point, but most airlines had "focal points". TWA for example was big in the west and midwest. Their route structure focused around Kansas City and St. Louis as well as Los Angelas and of course JFK to Europe. United seemed to be focuse on Chicago and Denver. American at New York and Dallas and Braniff at Miami, Houston, and Dallas. Eastern tended to rely heavily on nonstop New York to Florida and smaller cities through Atlanta. They also were big in the Caribbean and at St. Louis. Besides the companies I just mentioned, there were trunk airlines like Frontier, Texas International, Air West, and North Central that stayed primarily in their own areas of the country. As for who was the biggest domestically.....probably Eastern, TWA, and then maybe maybe United. Oh how the times change.

From what I know, airlines has "focused points" as Cody said, but they already had quite centered their network around that point. The difference with the hub concept was that the transfers weren't as much organized, and the turn-arounds weren't as efficient.

But it's true that Eastern Airlines had quite some point-to-point routes rather than everything centered solely around MIA.

Eastern had a hub at ATL, and competed on a number of city pairs with DL. This was in addition to numerous point to point routs. National was primarly Atlantic seaboard to Florida and Fla along the Gulf coast. They might have had a micro hub at MSY and /or JAX.
UA was then the largest domestic airline with iots hubs at ORD and DEN. Also a mini hub at CLE with routs to the east coast and numerous great lakes/mid west cities, ie: FWA, SBN, GRR,LAN, etc. Most were 737-200's with an occasional 727, either 100 or 200. The CLE hub had fligts to MIA/TPA/FLL & ATL. AA was focused at ORD and DFW as now, but also had several point to points in the east, ie: LGA-DTW,LGA-BNA?,etc. TWA had a micro hub at PIT for a while with flights to IND,CMH,CVG and DAY among others as well as STL & MCI. Deltas routes followed the old Delta pattern of the South east and the C&S routs acquired in the 50's from the midwest to ATL & Florida. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that tidbit. Pre-dereg airlines somehow seem more interesting to me. Airlines didn't have 600 jets and flew to every point on the globe, plus there were more airlines. While overall competition has grown somewhat since dereg a lot of smaller cities have lost mainline jet service in favor of puddle jumpers and now some are getting RJ's.

Thanks desert! One add'l thought...many smaller/mid sized cities had only 1 or 2 carriers before de-reg. Now many have 4 or 5. Tru, service is with turbo props or incresingly RJ's. However, in many instances there are far more seats on any day than there was 22 yrs ago. I have family in FWA(used to live there too) only had UA & DL. Now it has AA,UA,DL,NW,US CO,&TW. AA &DL are all RJ service, NW is a mix, I think the balance is Saabs.
If one carrier takes a strike, bad weather at a hub, etc, you do have better alternatives.
