Hello All,

I apologize if I'm putting this one in the wrong forum but please move it if needed.

I learned today I will be going to Brisbane on the 16th of June and returning back on the 29th. I'm flying ATL-LAX and back on Delta but QANTAS across the Pacific. Some questions I have...

1) That is Winter down there so what temps can I expect?

2) Any possible guesses at load factors? I'll be in Steerage (unless I get my company to pay for the upgrade that the client doesn't buy) and am not looking forward to 14+ hours in a 17" seat.

3) I'm on an N fare class. I'm guessing by the price it is "bottom of the barrel and be lucky we let you on the plane" type of fare.

4) Any suggestions for upgrades to Business?

5) Any other info you folks can think for would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help. Oh, flight information...

As a southern Californian (San Diego) with quite a few Aussie friends, I can tell you that the weather along Australia's southeastern coast is very similar to California - Mediterranean, it is called. Fairly mild winters, warm dry summers.

You will find the weather cool (it is late autumn there), but it shouldn't be freezing unless you go inland a bit.

You are probably going to see VERY full planes. QANTAS and United basically have this route locked up to themselves, and even at 14 hours, they have quite good load factors.

Enjoy your trip!!

I agree with PanAm747. BNE might be a little cool...kind of like L.A. during the winter. MEL in my opinion is quite a bit cooler and wetter. I would associate MEL's weather to be more like PDX or SEA during the winter.

Thanks folks. I'll only be in MEL to switch planes so I'm not too worried about that one weaherwise. I suppose my leather jacket with the lining removed will be good to go.

On a side note I'm looking to cash in my SkyMiles and Marriott points and head right back down there in early August with the little lady. How's the water down at Surfer's Paradise then? I'm looking at the Marriott there for a day or two, along with the one in Brisbane and then down in Sydney. Is that driveable or should I leave it to flying Virgin Blue or QANTAS? I'll post this portion in Non-Av but any things you would recommend seeing would be much appreciated.

You do know you'll have to fly Korean via ICN to do that, right? You might want to read the threads in the SkyTeam forum on flyertalk.com about that.

I would fly the BNE-SYD portion of your trip, or I think you can take a train too.

I was actually looking at using my miles to go on Singapore instead and take a couple of days in Singapore as well as Oz. It all depends on ticket availability though. Warnings or so for Korean? I'll go check out FlyerTalk.

N class is one of the lowest fare types that isn't allowed to be upgraded using points for members in the QF Frequent Flyer programme. QF likes to upgrade its higher tier, or commercially important, pax first. I wouldn't get your hopes up if you are not a higher tier QF/oneworld frequent flyer.

Not a warning about the airline as much as availability. There are a lot of threads on how hard it is to get awards to Australia, but I don't want to put you off trying!

The water in early August should be pretty cool still, as it is still winter down here at that time of year. Air temperature in Surfers shouldn't be too bad, but the water (as in surf) maybe a bit to chilly. Of course the hotel will have a heated pool.

The drive would take about 10 hours BNE/SYD, thats with out any significant stops, besides rest breaks. It is not an overly taxing drive, but for a tourist you would be better off doing it over 2 to 3 days to stop and take in some of the sights and coastal towns. If time is not a priority drive, if it is, fly.

Just remember that if you fly BNE/SYD there is only QF and DJ, out of OOL there is also Porn, sorry I meant Jetstar.

If you have a chance you should consider the Sunshine Coast north of BNE. Still a popular destination just not over run with tourists like the Gold Coast.

Enjoy your trips.

Not really, the east coast south from Rockhampton (north of BNE) is sub-tropical, not Mediterranean. It can rain anytime of the year, summers are hot & humid, winters mild, but cooler the further south. BNE will be in the low 20sC, day, maybe as low as 5-8C at night.

Quoting PanAm747 (Reply 1):

Actually it will be full on winter (1 June - 30 August). Be hard to find freezing weather around BNE, inland or costal, any time of the year.

Very full, maybe more so southbound than northbound. Your south bound flight is most likely a two class B744, dont know if they have AVOD yet. Your flight from MEL should be a 3 class B744ER with the lot.

Getting an upgrade out of QF without paying cash or Oneworld FF points? HaHaHa! N class may not be upgradeable anyway, ring their service centre and ask.

Agghh! Not what I wanted to hear. Good for QANTAS but not good for me.

It would have to be cash since I have no status with AA, QF, or anyone else in OneWorld. The thing that stinks is our corporate travel policy says Business but the client says Steerage and expects us to hit the ground running the minute we get there.

If they expect you to do business on 18 June, I would talk to your boss and get your company to put a stop to such nonsence!!! You will be in NO fit state to conduct any business on the day you arrive in BNE. It would be very foolish to trust anything you did that day, I certainly would not let you anywhere near my production IT system (for example).

We arrive on Sunday morning so we have that day to recover and then be there on Monday. Luckily most everything will be preconfigured by me back home in ATL before sending it over so it shouldn't be too bad. I think the first couple will be training the folks anyways. Going East to West usually doesn't bug me if I get some sleep on the plane and then go to bed at a normal time that evening upon arriving. Coming back home is the one that kills me.

I've asked and it has been shot down so far. But we'll see what happens in the next few days.

Well, as you are travelling for work (regardless of who is paying), then you should be flying in J class. If the client is only going to pay Y (and N class is just about classed as Y!!!), the your company should be booking J for you, and invoicing the client for the Y tix, and covering the cost themselves.

It will be warmish, apart from MEL, but luckily you dont need to go outside. Yesterday in Sydney we recorded the coldest day of the year, it was a high of 15C. There was a bitter wind.

Good luck with your trip.

Thanks for all the info folks.

2 weeks out and they won't give seat assignments until we check in at LAX. Arghh!

Can anyone check current passenger loads on my flights? Thanks!

I wouldn't stress too much... it's not peak travel season down under, as it's winter. I flew LAX-SYD in February even and Y had heaps and heaps of seats free. One guy had a row of 4 to himself, I had no-one next to me, a couple had a row of four (and had a nice "sleep")... so if you don't mind sitting right down the back, there might be space. It's cold and windy there inflight, so take a blanket as the QF ones are so thin in Y that you may as well have nothing on.

I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

The markets are totally different, but you would be surprised to see the flight loads, during the Southern hemisphere winter, on both QF and SA between South Africa and Australia. As soon as the winter school holidays start the flights are usually packed, as during the summer school holidays.

flight time to BNE should only be around 12hours...not bad at all!!
Youll recieve...

Supper/Drinks
Snack Q
Breakfast
(fruit is avaliable throughout the flight)

On the MELLAX trip flight time will be around 13.40 (just did this flight last week)

You will recieve
Bar

(Fruit is also avaliable throughout the flight but get in fast as they go quick! Also a quick word, make sure you bring your own food on this flight...you get very hungry and the Breakfast is not served until 4-3hours out of LAX) Also the Snack Q bag is CRAP to say the least- on this flight.
