Please everyone cool your jets! No, Zippyjet did not inhale too much jet fuel. I searched this topic in civil and found nothing. Also, I sort of call this a spotting of sorts!

While cooking ribs, keeping my 18 pound cat away from the stove, I watched last night's season finale of CSI Miami. Well, to my wild suprise, Horatio Kane thwarted a thug in the local bad ass gang from using a shoulder launcher to down an airliner departing MIA. Was it my imagination or was it really one of our FL 737s ascending the tropical skys? Also, where was this scene filmed in proximity to MIA? Which direction? Toward the Everglades or, towards Miami Beach?

For those avid followers of CSI Miami, I hate to burst your bubble, but it is actually filmed in and around El Sugendo California.

2 years ago I was staying at the Hilton Garden Inn on E. Mariposa in El Sugendo over a weekend and they were filming an auto crash scene for CSI Miami 1 block from the hotel. Because it was a weekend, there was little traffic on E. Mariposa so the street was closed down all day. The crash scene took place at the intersection of E. Mariposa and the side street where the Marriott Courtyard is located which is in a corporate park. This location with all the palm trees could very easily pass for Miami.

We were allowed to observe the rehearsing and filming of the crash scene on Saturday, which took over 3 hours to do from behind the camera crew positions. I did not see any of the stars of the show that day but when we left on Sunday morning the crew had reset up the crash scene and when we did see the show on TV David Caruso was at the crash site so he must have been there on that Sunday.

After the crash, some bad guys came out of a truck firing guns that was following a hearse that was rammed by a station wagon. Before they filmed the actual crash, the film crew passed out foam earplugs for everyone because they were using live blank ammo.

Because it was on a weekend, there were a lot of the film crew’s kids there but besides my wife and myself, I think there was maybe 3 or 4 other bystanders. The El Sugendo police made sure that everyone was out of camera range.

A few episodes have actually been flimed in Miami but yes that is correct. I am glad that the show is not actually flimed here in Miami, its bad enough when they have to close down highways for movies shoots a few times a year.

Did anybody watch CSI Miami on sunday. I'm not sure but did I see a twin engine plane, smoke coming from an engine, fly right over a convertible car with its gear up; then crash (I assume it did especially by the noise they made on the show.)
Then.....when they showed the A/C it was sitting on its gear apparently in very good condition!! The door suddenly opens and out pops 2 "survivors" unhurt, 1 in handcuffs the other with a pistol. Yada Yada Yada!!

This show hurts to watch it. 1st computer sharks then an all powerful wimpy Tsunami then this. Yes I realize its T.V. but enough.....

Agreed- It's actually one of the dumbest shows on TV right. So far from reality that it is not even funny, yet people buy into it and it's ratings are good. If you want to see the 'REAL' Miami CSI watch the Discovery Channel or A&E. Both have had great shows on what it's really like.

While the above comments have all been true...that is not to say the aircraft wasn't filmed in Miami at one point.

Every season, usually in the summer, the 2nd Unit will travel to Miami to film all the exterior/atmospheric shots that will be needed for the upcoming season. [When I lived in Dallas as a kid, and my Dad was involved with that stuff; I remember the crew coming to to Dallas for one to two weeks at most - usually in July.
Each star(s) would come out for the day to film the outdoor scenes they were in....I remember one day I hung out with my Dad when Charlene Tilton was being filmed driving a convertible up the driveway leading to Southfork, and then we headed downtown to see her over at Thanksgiving Square having lunch at a FAKE RESTARAUNT with Larry Hagman....There is no outdoor cafe there...Even the shots of J.R. sitting at his desk with the Dallas skyline behind him, were done on a L.A. soundstage.]

So don't be too disappointed Zippy, it is entirely possible that they filmed, an aircraft, or maybe several; for a few different episodes, all on the same day; taking off and landing at MIA....BUT, everything else is done on a stage in LA, or as Jetstar showed, even on the streets of L.A..
That place I swear; It substitutes for everywhere!, if you look close in some shots of Dallas, you can see mountains in the background! Oops.

I talked to a producer who told me that they like the haze and smog, because it does a good job of hiding the mountains that would be a dead giveaway that something set in Dallas, or Miami, or Chicago, or wherever, is being faked.

And finally, as EMBQA alluded to....There isn't a police station in the country that looks like the Miami CSI set on the inside in real life!

Anyway......back to the original question....

Yes, the scene did contain a rather poor edit of an Airtran 737 (without winglets) descending in the background. I watched it frame-by-frame on my DVR a few times just to make sure I wasn't seeing things as well!  Smile

The overlay of the 737 into the sky was rather poor, but I suppose most people didn't notice.

I don't think that the word "airtran" was visible on the front of the fuselage (edited-out), but the "a" on the tail was quite obvious.

I wonder how Airtran feels about being the guinea pig airline that some gang member on tv was trying to launch a rocket at?

I was in Miami the couple of days that they shut down the bridge to shoot Bad Boys II. Which bridge is it again? I remember hearing it on the local news, but I forgot.

Cheers,
Cameron

The bulk is shot in El Sugendo in neighborhoods that look like south Florida, but they go to Miami a few times a year to pick up scenes for multiple episodes at a time, so that scene may very well have been shot in Miami.

CSI in Vegas has a similar shooting schedule.

Yea that was the Macarthur Causeway one of the main causeways to get into Miami Beach from the mainland. Yea when the closed that up if made traffic pretty bad getting in and out of Miami Beach and around Downtown.

This causeway is the gateway into the trendy South Beach (Ocean Drive)

Was it live rounds or blanks? Can't be both.

That's the McArthur Causeway. It connects downtown Miami with South Beach, running just north of the Port of Miami, the world's busiest cruise ship terminal.

CSI Miami has made some factual errors in the past. For example, there was one episode where the detectives solved a crime by looking at video showing the front license plates on cars. The only problem is that Florida doesn't require front end license plates on cars.
