New signs up on the wall in Concourse D saying "Please excuse our appearance during roof construction."
Most of the ceiling tiles are off in the D7/D8 area and there seems to be lots of new wiring going on.
I know flat screen TVs were installed for the CNN network recently. And in the last year a few new concessions have opened in previously hall areas:
2. Sam Adams Brewery
Despite the fact that the Concourses in the Central Terminal Bldg are close to 40 years old, AA does pour some money into the D gates for their Business Travelers.
Anyway, back to the original reason for the post . . . Does anyone have insight as to what AA is doing with the ceiling/roof. I know the roof does leak in certain spots when it rains but it seems a little more involved than a new roof.

Well when I flew out of LGA a couple of Mondays ago when it was pouring....the gate area there looked like it was Niagra Falls. The tiles were still in place but there was water coming in everywhere. Most of the section was blocked off and they had garbage cans and pails to catch all the water. Overhead some guy from the Port Authority on the phone saying that there were major leaks...hence maybe that is why they started repairing? All I know is that when I arrived on Wednesday there was an extremely potent oder of tar...I was almost choking from it...so I guess wherever the leak is...they fixed it.

They have been doing all kinds of construction on the Central Terminal Building lately, and it will continue.
A lot of it, from what I know, is just what you said....new wiring. They are trying to freshen up the entire airport and improve standards for requirements due to hurricane emergency planning and remodernization of the airport.
A while back, similar signs were in between Concourse B and C, where they installed the new security area which allowed more room for metal detectors, and even allowed passenger to have an eastery past security (New York Sports Bar), which was a major issue that was addressed in the remodernization project.
Though I don't know details, they might be trying to do something similar at Concourse D.
PJ, maybe if you know a pilot or someone involved with American, you can find out some insider info and share it with us.
