From the article: After the jetport was abandoned, the building had a string of tenants, most recently the United Parcel Service, which used it as a packaging area.

Now UPS is planning to construct a facility nearby.

Damn that brings back memories. I grew up in Orlando and remember the "old" jetport. Air Force jets used one runway, commercial airliners used the others. Kind of fun spotting as a kid...watching 727's take off while B-52's were landing. Back in the early 70's, I seem to recall baggage carts crossing the walkways in front of passengers walking to the gates. I went back in 1975 and it was world's different then from what it was.

I left Orlando in 1973 at the age of 15- climbed stairs outside to board an Eastern L-1011. That plane is forever etched in my mind - they had IFE of music...as the plane left towards the south and turned to head to Atlanta, "Hummingbird" by Seals and Crofts was playing in the headphones...I looked down on the place I grew up and heard the ending chorus of "don't fly away, don't fly away".

In the mid-seventies, I made a day-trip from MIA to ORL aboard an Air Florida L188 Electra and used these facilities...sorry to see it go  Sad

Landed at MCO Jetport in May 1968 on NA. A DL 880 was just departing. Used the old terminal many times over the years. They brought your bags out to the curb for pickup. Walked about 20 feet to the rental car area. Also flew SO IAD-MCO with 4 intermediate stops...took all day but very cheap by 1973 standards.

I remember vividly that old terminal. I was a kid at the time but it left a distinct impression. Military people everywhere. I can still remember clearly the details of one trip there, massive thunderstorms, walking out to the aircraft in at least 2 inches of water. Wildest ride ever on a commercial airliner. An Eastern DC-9-14, MCO-FLL and we werent wings level for one full minute from takeoff to touchdown. We had been originally booked on a non-existant DL flight so coupled with the wild weather and accompanying delays we had plenty of time to check out that terminal. I didnt realize it was still standing. I'll miss it.

I remember listening to my air band radio back in 1972 during some "less than good" weather and watching the planes come in there. The tower was staffed with Air Force personnel, and the were doing GCA (ground controlled approach) for the commercial jets. They were pretty cool to listen to...from about 5 miles out, the controller told the aircraft that there was no need to acknowledge further transmissions, then began directing them all the way to the ground...four miles, slightly left....slightly above glideslope. Watching just off the end of the runway, a jetliner emerges from the clouds almost right on top of us.

Dunno. But there is a small corner of the old terminal still up. The end where CO stores was at.
