STL Expansion- Why Now?

Howdy folks!

The STL Expansion that was initiated several years ago when TWA still took to the air seemed like a great plan at that time. Passenger traffic, which peaked at 30.5 million in 2000, dropped to 13 million in 2004.

Of course with the death of TWA and the shrinkage of AA operations out of STL, what is the real value in continuing with the airport expansion? The airport looks like a ghost town right now. Would it be better to stop construction, save all that money, and only expand when the need is there.

Or is this continued expansion an extension of the expression "If you build it they will come"

I must say, it is very sad to see my childhood hometown airport become a sleepy depressed airfield.

Lambert back in the day when TWA was healthy.. check out the 747 and the L1011
