Chinese May Ask Airbus To Build Factory In Tianjin

China's government may want Airbus to make A320 commercial planes in Tianjin, a port city on the country's northeastern coast, French Transport Minister Dominique Perben told reporters Friday.

"Some people expect the decision to be in favor of Tianjin," Perben said, according to Olivier Guyonvarch, the French Embassy's Beijing-based press officer.

A decision on the site of the A320 plant may come in the next two weeks and would enable the world's largest maker of commercial planes to begin a feasibility study for its first assembly plant outside Europe. Airbus could add four planes every month to its global A320 production capacity with the new factory, helping it catch up with The Boeing Co. in a market where aircraft worth a total of $230 billion may be ordered by 2023.

Presumably Shanghai will be pulling just as hard on their end of the tug o' war rope.

Interesting that a week ago M. Dominique Perben was outlining strategy for the 'new A350' venture. Rather suggests that the French Government is taking a more active role in running Airbus lately.

Is this Production line going to produce the entire A32X family? IIRC, when this was first announced only the A319, A320 & A321 were mentioned for production with the A318 to remain in Europe. Can anyone clarify this?

It's good we'll see an announcement soon, I believe too that Shanghai will still be lobbying intensly for this facility. With the decision imminent we'll most likely see formalisation at Farnborough and hopefully an allocation as to which Chinese carriers will get the 150 A32X series ordered in last years GTA.

Given it'll take time for the infrastructure to be set up it will also be of interest as to how many will be delivered directly to Chinese carriers.

This would allow Airbus to continue producing up to 4 A320s per month after closing the lines in Europe after the NSR enters production. A320 orders may trickle in slowly for quite a few years after the NSR starts selling as some airlines choose short-term slot availability over ultimate performance -- particularly airlines already operating A320s.

I know this is purely rumour at this stage.

However, a few personal sources also indicated Airbus actually prefers somewhere not too far from Beijing where it has a Customer Service Centre, a Training Centre as well as a ISO9001-approved Spares Centre.

So, Tianjin & Xi'an the two that most decision-makers prefer at this stage.

However, I guess we will never know the final winner until it has been announced.

China’s port city of Tianjin is frontrunner for selection as the site of Airbus China’s A320 family assembly line, industry sources say.

Airbus China has selected Tianjin over three other Chinese cities and is concluding a deal to assemble A320s at a new factory to be built there, sources say. The other short-listed contenders are: Zhuhai, a port city near Macau in southern China; Shanghai, home to Shanghai Aircraft which used to assemble McDonnell Douglas airliners; and Xian in western China, home to Xian Aircraft (XAC).
