Hey, long time lurker, first time poster. I was gonna sign up when the SLC spotting threads were really active, but never did...
Anyway, I'm over on 4800 West and California, and I'll be heading up to the airport to try to get a shot. I don't have any fancy equipment, but we'll see what I can pull off.
FlightShadow, I know you go spotting on occasion ... drop me a PM if you see this and maybe we can meet up (or you can at least give me some hints on to where to go...)

Well, I didn't really know where to go, but I managed to at least choose the correct runway. I got a few shots with a point-and-shoot, none of which are especially great (I had to use 10x zoom). To make matters worse, one of the FedEx birds decided to taxi in front of me. And all the construction equipment down there......yeah, not great photo opportunities.

Alright...None of these are terribly HQ, and sorry for the annoying copyright notice but I'm trying something I've never done before, and they are kinda necessary.
Blasted Gulfstream
I knew they'd be using the 16s so I headed out to UPS. While there I saw a guy in a little black car pulled over on the side just watching the planes get ousted by the cops, but we were in the UPS parking lot and they left us alone. The place where it parked was crawling with cops and airport ops, so I didn't linger..but if it's there tomorrow I think I'll head up there and try and get some better shots. I know, these suck...

You bet it would! What time do you think you'll be up? I'm just wondering cuz I need a way of knowing if it's still there tomorrow afternoon... (Matsa, are you in a position that you could, without going to a lot of trouble, see if RJ is there tomorrow?)

Sorry I fell off the face of the earth, but the SLC thread explains it all. I would have loved to see the RJ 340 come in at SLC. Thanks to all of you that went out there to get a few shots. Flight don't beat yourself up over those photos, you had short notice and you did what you could. I think they look great and my favorite is the front shot with all of the FBI looking black cars around it. MastaHanky, thanks for running out there too and getting that pic. Being from Salt Lake I don't pay attention to the quality near as much as I look at the beauty of the SLC airport and mountains.
Western I'll give you a call this week to catch up on how things have been going. I also need advice about CO trans-atlantic service. Talk to you all soon!

Well, got him departing 16L for ADW, on schedule, at 0956. Crummy photos again it's too bad about the substandard conditions, I was really hoping for the 34s as then I would've been able to capture some very nice shots. Oh well....
While watching it take off, it was very obvious that the A340 uses the curvature of the earth to get airborne
Big thanks to UnitedFan for the heads-up on this beast!!!

Quoting Stirling (Reply 19): Anyone find out what it was doing in SLC?
I actually have my doubts about whether or not whoever was on board was visiting SLC, on these grounds:
Yesterday, after JY-ABH landed, some people got on afforementioned N116HM and flew off. Today, 15 minutes before JY-ABH left, N116HM arrived, taxied up next to JY-ABH, some people got off and away went JY-ABH. Mabye they were visiting Idaho Falls, or Jackson Hole, and flew into SLC because it was the closest airport that could take an A340?

i assume the plane was carrying members of the jordanian royal family, at anyrate, must be nice to be able to charter a plane like that to go skiing!
i would wonder though why not just take the G-5 from the east coast direct to wherever their final destination was? why endure the somewhat inconvenience of flying to salt lake, changing planes, flying back to salk lake, changing planes and back to the east coast?
I could have elite status if I wanted it, but flying the same airline all the time is boring.
25 FlightShadow: There were a lot more people and a lot more cargo in that thing than would've fit in a Gulfstream. Things were being loaded and people boarding befor
26 FlightShadow: The departure pictures are now on MyAv - departed 16L at 0955 for ADW Once again, sorry for the poor quality
