I flew UA 112 LAX-ORD today, and before we got to O'Hare, they "shut it down" due to thunderstorms. We were running low on fuel, so the captain diverted us to Rockford, Illinois (don't happen to know the airport code). I listened to this unfold on Channel 9 (the best in-flight amenity in the sky, if you ask me).

Anyway, we landed, and I immediately saw 2 other UA 757s, along with a US Airways A319 (new colors, with an HP registration). And right behind us, a CX B744F landed at little ol' Rockford. It was quite a site.

Anyway, we waited an hour on the ground and then got back in the air to O'Hare (where it was a total mess, my connection was canceled, and here I am at the O'Hare Hilton -- but that's another story.)

Is Rockford often used for O'Hare diversions? The ground crew there seemed to know what they were doing.

Travelin man- Yes Rockford (RFD) Chicago / Rockford International Airport almost always will get a diversion or two. Most of the time the planes go to MKE or MSN, maybe South Bend? But Rockford I've seen a few 744s of UA's at RFD, 777s, 737, A320. Never seen a CX744 though, thats great.

RFD has some passenger service. UAX from RFD-DEN 2 a day, Allegiant four-six days a week depending on destination and time of year to LAS and SFB. Apple Vacations seasonally. They have gained and lost other airlines like the snap of a finger.

RFD has the 2nd longest runway in IL after ORD, so some big planes usually go to RFD during diversions.

Yeah, good storms around ORD last evening. I heard a UA 757 pilot on approach refuse ATC's instructions as he didn't want to fly into a large cell. He refused ATC's instructions twice, then said something like "We are implementing our emergency authority and we are not turning north into that cell!"

Anyway, here are the diversions into RFD, including the rare CX744:

Here's what we got in GRR. Not quite as exciting as the CX744 in RFD:

AAL 1609 from YUL (M82)
UAL 337 from BUF (733)
UAL 623 from DCA (733)
UAL 699 from BDL (733)
UAX 7681 from MYR (E70)

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Rockford (RFD) is a common diversion airport since it is huge. It has two long runways and plenty of space. As a resident of Rockford it would be interesting to see all those planes on the ground. RFD does get some big stuff from UPS since it is a mini hub.

IND is another common diversion airport for ORD.

That is good to here. I think they are great. Rockford although it is the second biggest city in Illinois with a population including suburbs of well over 200,000 still has a friendly small town charm about it.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Nice list of all the diversions. I thought the HP/US plane was an A319, but I guess it was an A320.

I noticed all of the UPS planes (including a DC-8, and a couple of larger planes). I didn't realize UPS had a significant operation there. Of course, I didn't even know where Rockford was prior to yesterday.

Hey man thanks for the compliment.....I was one of those guys running around trying to get you guys back on your way. We have a great group of guys. Many of us who sleep/breath/eat this stuff. That day was alittle harder then most because the USAir A320 had a MX issue and pissed passengers. We had to send some other guys to the other side of the airport for the Cathay 744. We had 8 diversions that day i think. We had 2 yesterday (UA A320, UA 757). We have had 20 total in the last week if i remember correctly. We also handle Alligiant Airlines, Ryan Internation and fuel for UPS.

Diversions are nothing knew to us since we have 10,000ft and 8200ft runways. UPS brings in 747's durring their peak season all the time. Wisconsin Air Nation Guard out of MKE has a few KC-135's that like to come do touch-and-goes for a few hours just about every week.

Kind of sad, RFD is not an exciting place (I say that as a resident of the Chicago NW Suburbs) but it has some significant ops there.

RFD, BLV and MLI all have 10000ft runways.
