Portugalia has applied to become an associate member of SkyTeam. The planning is that it will join the alliance in 2008. Air France will be the sponsor airline.
Not totally unexpected, consdering the codeshares they already have with AF and KLM. Though, a nice addition to the alliance to capture the Portugese market.
It seems that after the bigger 'flag' carriers, now regional and smaller carriers are joing alliances one-by-one.
After reading several very positive reports about Portugalia, I think it's a good addition to the alliance.

Great for Portugalia. Nice to see it coming after good cooperation among Portugalia, Air Europa and Air France
Quoting EddieDude (Reply 2): Would it make sense for a Portugalia-Air Europa merger?
Not at all... They are good at their resp markets. And there's not very much to improve or "un-overlap". Portugalia runs a regional fleet and Air Europa is stuck like glue to the 737-800 for short-haul. Portugalia does not serve (consistently) Air Europa hubs so the current FFP and codeshare agreements seem nice.
