This is a local Sri Lankan newspaper report about a Thai International aircraft having difficulties over the weekend. Any further info on this?


Midnight drama on TG308

A loud explosion aboard a passenger aircraft, an engine on fire, flight attendants running up and down the aisle, passengers wearing life jackets and a descending plane, with the pilot trying to maintain level flight.

This may all sound like a script from a Hollywood movie but in fact, it is exactly what took place on Thai Airways flight TG 308, with more than 200 passengers on board, which nearly crashed early Saturday morning, just minutes after takeoff from Bandaranaiake International airport.Thai Airways officials say the Aircraft experienced technical problems, resulting in a fire in the right engine of the aircraft.


Thai Airways flight TG 308 took off from Colombo as scheduled around 1.25 am on Saturday and Mr. Hashim had dozed off just as the airbus aircraft was in full flight, despite some passengers feeling something unusual.

Around 20 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft took a turn and was preparing to land, with the flight attendants being told by the pilot to go to their landing stations, leaving Mr. Hashim to wonder if they were unexpectedly landing in the Maldives. “I was confused, because this flight is direct to Bangkok. When it was descending, I saw the lights at the airport and was convinced it was the Maldives,” Mr. Hashim said.

However, as the aircraft taxied on the runway, the passengers realised they were back at Colombo Airport and the pilot later made an announcement saying they returned owing to a technical default.

The passengers disembarked and transferred to the transit lounge and made to wait for more than five hours before boarding the same plane, which took off at 8.05 am.

But little did the passengers realize that the worst was yet to come. Some 10 minutes after takeoff, there was a fairly loud explosion on Thai Airways flight TG 308, setting fire to one of the engines.

“Passengers at the rear had detected the fire. One guy had recorded the fire with his video camera. One of the stewardesses was running up and down. By this time we were wide awake and felt the plane was losing altitude and also tilting to a side. Perhaps the pilot was trying to balance it or turn it around,” Mr. Hashim said.

With the aircraft descending fast and just above the ocean, the passengers in the economy class were told to put on their life jackets, creating a bit of a commotion, although, Mr. Hashim recalled, that most people were relatively calm.However, the pilot somehow managed to control the aircraft and made a safe, emergency landing back at Colombo Airport, where fire engines and rescue staff on standby, doused the flames on the engine and got the passengers safely off the plane.

While praising the pilot for landing the aircraft safely, the passengers of flight TG 308 were questioning the decision to take off after the initial “technical glitch”, which forced the plane to return just minutes into the flight. “When we took off for the second time, we were told that the flight will take 4-hours to reach Bangkok, because of a problem with the aircraft. The normal duration is 3 hours. They were taking a chance with over 200 passengers on board,” Mr. Hashim noted.

The passengers feel they were put at risk, while many of them will remain traumatised by the incident, which could have been avoided altogether, if proper remedial measures were taken after the initial “technical glitch” on Thai Airways flight TG 308.

This is possibly the biggest load of bollocks I have ever read in a newspaper aviation report. Even the 'New Zealand Herald' shines compared to this.

I saw that aircraft at CMB Saturday morning just before the first takeoff. I departed CMB on SQ469. Of course, everything seemed normal at the time. I'm glad both to have missed the drama and that everyone was ok.

What is bollocks about a flaming engine? My heart rate would have gone up a tad bit too even if I was flying it or sitting at the back of cattle class.

While the language is a bit dramatic in the beginning and the style is sensational, the facts seem to point toward drama.

To a layman, any small event in the sky is a major catastrophic event. However, if you put this in context of being a passenger with TWO aborts and a flaming engine to cap it off, there is grounds for a dash of "what if".

Newspapers are not in the business of writing technical report akin to the NTSB. They sell newspapers and get people's opinions. The passenger who is quoted here is quite precise with his opinion (which makes some sense given the event). I dont see anything bollocks about that,either.

I would like to see perhaps another account or article on the story. This might bring to light a more accurate less dramatic story. What kind of Airbus does Thai fly to CMB? A330 or A300?

According to Thai Website, It is A330-330 but untill very recently I used to see TG A300-600s in CMB.

Thai flight makes emergency landing at Sri Lanka airport


June 3, 2006 (AFP) - A Thai airways flight from Colombo to Bangkok made an emergency landing Saturday at Sri Lanka's only international airport shortly after take-off, airport officials said.

The Airbus A-330 aircraft carrying over 225 passengers and crew reported engine trouble and returned to the airport after being in the air for a few minutes, an official said.

"We were told there was some problem with an engine and the pilots decided to turn back," an airport spokesman said. "The aircraft is being checked and the passengers have been moved to hotels."

There was no immediate comment from the airline

Emergency landings: Thai airways explains what happened


Thai airways officials yesterday said some metal particles found in the tail pipe of engine No. 2 resulting in loud noises and visible sparks led the flight commander to shut down the engine and bring flight TG 308 back to the Bandaranaike International Airport last Saturday.


Thai airways in a statement said the aircraft was undergoing a full inspection and a brand new engine was being fitted by Thai Airways International technicians and the SriLankan airlines aircraft maintenance division.


Thai airways in its statement said: “On June 3, 2006 Thai Airways International flight TG 308 scheduled for Bangkok departed Colombo at 0125 LT utilizing Airbus A 330 aircraft. After ten minutes of flying, the Pilot-in-Command observed warning indicators being activated in the cargo compartment and decided to return to the BIA. As there was no other default indication the pilot announced the change of flight plan. In keeping with the maximum safety procedure a ground check was performed and the aircraft was released for departure.


The flight departed for the second time at 0755 LT, and three minutes after take off the pilot observed a warning in Engine No. 2 due to metal particles found in the engine tail pipe causing loud noise and visible sparks. In keeping with maximum safety procedure the pilot decided to return to the BIA. For THAI Technical Department, quality is never compromised, as its main concern is the safety of all passengers. Its maintenance service, of the highest International standards, is thus second to none.”
