They will probably need to keep some for a few more years even after all of the new NG order comes through due to route and frequency expansion. I am quite sure they will squeeze every penny of value they can from them before they need major checks or mx.

Those -500s cost CO a lot to operate because of lease rates that date back to the Lorenzo-induced bankruptcy. The -300s are mainly owned as they are older models and actually have a lower overall trip cost for CO than the -500s do. The reason that they are being retired first is likely cycle number.
