by now you've probably read this thread on CO's new order. As of today CO has 66 737NGs on backorder. Given these order how fast can CO retire its aging fleet of 737-300s?

They will probably need to keep some for a few more years even after all of the new NG order comes through due to route and frequency expansion. I am quite sure they will squeeze every penny of value they can from them before they need major checks or mx.

CO has already begun retiring our 300s. The last one will exit in 2009.

They already recieve heavy checks, They just won't be getting any major upgrades. (IFE or in-seat power)

And from what I understand the -500 series will not be too far behind the -300 on the retirement plan.

Those -500s cost CO a lot to operate because of lease rates that date back to the Lorenzo-induced bankruptcy. The -300s are mainly owned as they are older models and actually have a lower overall trip cost for CO than the -500s do. The reason that they are being retired first is likely cycle number.

The oldest 733s are 21 years old and were delivered in 1985 with all but four being delivered during or before 1987.

The 735s were delivered between 1994 and 1998. Half of those were ordered in Bethune's era at Continental. So in general the 735s are almost 10 years newer than the 733s.
