The first 767-300 in AA's fleet to sport the next generation business class product entered service today between DFW and LAX as flight number 2407. The aircraft will overnight in LAX today and fly LAX-HNL for the next three days as flight numbers 31 to HNL and 162 back to LAX.

The aircraft, tail # 396, is the first in American's fleet of 767-300s to get the new business class product, IFE and cabin interior. The entire fleet will be outfitted with the new lie-flat seets this fall, with project completion expected in January 2007. At that time, AA will introduce the new product on it's 777s while also installing Flagship Suites on those 777s that don't already have it.

Why would they waste the new seats on Hawaii flights? Shouldn't they try to use them on routes where their prodect is inferior - like JFK/ORD/DFW-CDG or JFK-ZRH??

I too find it interesting that they send the first plane to Hawaii for three days. People flying to Hawaii even in business class don't pay that high of fares. There might be a reason to keep it flying domestic in case there are technical problems with the seat, which are inevitable with any new design.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I would guess HNL turns out of LAX would be advantageous in that the aircraft will see more segments flown in fewer number of days, giving maintenance the ability to test the product real-time without inconveniencing passengers on longer, more premium routes should their be maintenance issues with the new seat. Flying the aircraft on shorter stage lengths will put more people in those seats in a fewer number of days to truly test the seat's performance.

They aren't permanetley set for Hawai'i right now. They will be used mainly on JFK-EZE, MIA-GRU, DFW-LGW, and, soon, RDU-LGW, as they are phased in. However, it is too expensive to guarantee they will be on any given route because of subs, etc. AA will attempt to rotate them into those routes, but isn't going to go out of their way to do it, with DFW-LGW-RDU-LGW-DFW being the exception, since the reason the 777 is being dropped from RDU-LGW is because the new business class is an accepetable replacement for the F class service that was offered.

Its basically an in-service trial. Keeping the plane on closed loop flying from a 767 maintenance base will allow AA to monitor if any issues come up with the new cabins.
A wide scale roll out of the new cabins are not planned until after the new year.

The aicraft is supposedly only doing Hawaii turns for ~1 week before it starts regular Europe service.

When the RDU-LGW is downgraded to a 767 will it have the same routing, thus making all AA flights from DFW to LGW 767s?  Confused

I have only seen diagrams of the new 767-300 layout, but the best feature to me is the addition of a cross-aisle just behind the galley. It is very annoying to both the PAX and the F/A's when people have to cross through the cramped galley to use the lav. This is a major improvement. I can't wait until they're all converted.

Oh sure.. sweeten the deal for people flying to HNL and then pull the candy away...

Then people will be complaining and wanting compensation for flying on 'old' seats when AA gives them the regular seating back.

I take it that the new Business Class seats will be deployed on International routes only?

No, I believe it's a 767 fleet wide enhancement. It may take a while, but it'll happen. Hawaii will eventually get them full time.

The entire 763 fleet will be outfitted with the new seat/interior/IFE by January 2007.

---NEXT-GENERATION BUSINESS CLASS DEBUTS TODAY ON 767---
After much anticipation, American's new 767-300 Next-Generation Business Class prototype aircraft entered service today. The new cabin enhancements on the 767-300s will result in a more competitive product in the international marketplace. The investment is necessary to maintain American's market share while delivering products and services that customers value and appreciate. The new product features a lie-flat Business Class seat, new overhead bins and a new inflight entertainment system. American will officially unveil the Next-Generation Business Class at the National Business Travel Association (NBTA) Convention and Exposition in Chicago next month. The remaining 767-300 aircraft will begin receiving these enhancements beginning in September.

Yes, it will have the same routing, DFW-LGW-RDU-LGW-DFW. However, DFW-LGW will still have a daily 777 flight.

One quick question: do us peons in steerage get the new overhead bins and Boeing interior design, too; or will it still be the 1980s boxy bins?

I don't work for FWA, their tenants, or their ad agency. But I still love FWA.

Sort of... the new interior is only being installed from the front back to the mid-cabin galley, or through the twilight zone which has 28 main cabin seats.

Over on Flyertalk, someone mentioned it is very similar to LH's new J class, so search for some pictures of that.

The twilight zone  Smile I love that name for that mini-cabin.
I wonder if they'll ever get rid of it in a future config. Seems like a waste of space, as much as I like it.

From what I understand, the aircraft N396AA will rotate for several weeks in the LAX-HNL and LAX-ORD. Most likely through summer. The conversions will begin on the rest of the fleet in Sept. Each airplane will take approximately 2-3 weeks to convert.

Here is a link to the brochure for AA's new seat. It's interesting how they played on the "innovative" tray table setup and the "next generation" entertainment (or rather a DigiPlayer) because they have no seatback entertainment...wonder how long those batteries are going to last!

The new PEDs (personal electronic devices) will have two powerports from which to plug the device into should you not want to run off battery power. There is one in the seatback where the device is stored and there is an additional one in the seat for customer's use with other electronic devices. The device is completely portable, allowing customers to use it from its storage spot, on their lap, tray table, where ever, and contains movies, tv programs, music, newspapers, magazines and games.

Thank God...I'm assuming the power cord will at least be able to 'hide' in the tray table (when in the up position) along with the PED? Cords are not fun to deal with; one is enough for the headset!
