The Last time I was in Doha was a week ago and I had a terrible experience with Qatar Airways who cancelled my booking by mistake and I had to stay for 10 hours in the current airport and they didn't even offer me any meal or anything for their mistake .... they claimed it was my mistake for not reconfirming.... that was strange considering that I bought a resrticted ticket that meant I had to fly on the designated dates... they messed up with me and didn't even make up for it!!!
The current Doha Airport is VERY SMALL.... 2009 is too far away and when I was there last week there was no where to sit down... everyone was complaining and people were all over each other...
NEVER AGAIN with Qatar Airways.... flight itself was good but the airport experience was terrible... so maybe not before 2009

They're supposed to start working now on a fast-track expansion of the existing terminal to cope with traffic growth in the next 1-3 years.

When I was transitting through Doha last month (shameless plug: have a look at my trip report... ), there was already quite a bit of work going on in the terminal, especially in the area where you enter it coming in from a flight - it was literally walking through a construction site, though I'm not sure what exactly they were working on there.
I can only agree with those that say DOH is too small - and considering the fact that QR is constantly expanding, I shudder at the thought of how congested that awful terminal will be in a year's time...

The current airport is a building site and the baggage area has shrunk by half and now delays of an hour are very commonplace.
Apart from the building work going on the worse aspect of arriving or departing is the immigration queues that are MASSIVE. A two hour wait in the queue after arriving from LHR is not what you really want or need
