I have heard bits and pieces of what may be announced. Cant wait to hear the actual announcement. One interesting thing will be is if they decide to start service to ABQ among some of the other interesting possibilities.

Today, MEH is officially naming MCI as the third hub for Midwest Express.

On October 29, YX will offer non-stop service between MCI, DSM and OMA.

Also, on the 29th of October, Skyway will enter the Kansas City market with non-stops to Little Rock and Moline on its BE1900.

In February, YX will offer non-stop service between SFO and MCI. Also, non-stop service between MCI and DCA.

Hopefully MCI will become a crew base. It is expected that MCI will, in effect, be an "MD-80 hub" for YX.

Also. YX seems committed to the DSM market. It will offer weekend service from DSM to MCO.

Will Little Rock and Moline keep their MKE routes or is it switching? Also, will any other Skyway markets be sent to MCI.

Well, I knew it was only a matter of time--MCI as the third hub, as I see it, is just another smack in the face to Wisconsin Legislators saying, "Hey, you wouldn't give us a break, so we'll put our newer aircraft elsewhere,"

What will the effect of this hub creation be in MKE? Will the ripples mean fewer flights, or no new destinations, no year-round SFO service? I certainly hope not, and hope to see some 717s in the near future, or perhaps a 100-seater canadair.

Midwest Express Names Kansas City Third Base of Operations; Announces Nationwide Service and Route Enhancements

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 6, 2000 -- At a news conference today, Midwest Express Airlines announced it has named Kansas City, Missouri its third base of operations. The announcement means the airline will continue to expand its nonstop jet service from the city, and develop a regional air service network by offering flights on Skyway Airlines, The Midwest Express Connection. Skyway Airlines is operated by Astral Aviation, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Midwest Express.

"We anticipate steady growth in the coming years," said Timothy E. Hoeksema, chairman and chief executive officer of Midwest Express. "This reflects a long-term commitment to providing Kansas City travelers with ‘the best care in the air.’" He added that establishing a base of operations brings with it a pledge by the airline to further increase employment and become a more visible presence in the Kansas City community.

Midwest Express has served Kansas City since 1989. With service announcements made today, Midwest Express and Skyway will offer 22 departures from Kansas City each weekday, serving 11 destinations nonstop -- and also provide the most nonstop service between Kansas City and Washington, D.C.-area airports.

Hoeksema announced that Midwest Express will introduce two one-stop, same-plane roundtrip flights each weekday between Kansas City and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on October 29, 2000. In February 2001, the airline will launch nonstop service -- one roundtrip each weekday -- between Kansas City and Washington National. That new service will be linked to new nonstop service between Kansas City and San Francisco, providing daily one-stop, same-plane service between San Francisco and Washington National.

Also on October 29, Midwest Express will enhance its existing Washington Dulles service by modifying schedules on its twice-daily, nonstop roundtrip flights to better serve Kansas City-originating passengers. "Offering nonstop service to both D.C.-area airports provides our passengers with convenient options when they travel to our nation’s capital," Hoeksema pointed out. Washington National is four miles south and Washington Dulles 25 miles west of downtown Washington, D.C.

Midwest Express also announced the launch of nonstop service from Kansas City to five cities. Twice-daily weekday roundtrip service to Omaha, Nebraska and one daily weekday roundtrip flight to Des Moines, Iowa begin October 29, as well as an additional roundtrip weekend flight to San Antonio. That same day, Skyway Airlines will begin twice-daily turboprop service between Kansas City and both Moline, Illinois and Little Rock, Arkansas each weekday.

"Our ongoing expansion in Kansas City is a result of strong support from business travelers," noted Hoeksema. "That same level of support will be crucial to the success of these and future route additions." He noted that Midwest Express is pleased to be recognized by Ingram’s as Kansas City’s preferred airline. The airline has received the magazine’s Gold award for best airline the last two years.

Additionally, Milwaukee service will be enhanced effective October 29. Midwest Express will add a fourth jet roundtrip to Omaha each weekday. Skyway will begin one regional jet roundtrip to Washington Dulles each weekday, bringing to three the number of Milwaukee-Dulles roundtrips offered each weekday by the two airlines.

Equipment will be upgraded on select Midwest Express (from DC-9 to MD-80) and Skyway flights (from Beech 1900D to 328JET) in a number of markets: Appleton, Wisconsin; Atlanta; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas/Ft. Worth; Des Moines, Iowa; and Washington, D.C. These changes are effective October 29.

Finally, several schedule-related modifications were also announced, effective in October:
· Timing of Midwest Express and Skyway flights between Milwaukee and certain East Coast destinations will be modified to help improve on-time performance at congested airports.
· One of two nonstop weekday flights between Des Moines and Indianapolis will be discontinued. The airline will continue to offer one nonstop as well as connecting flights between the cities each weekday.

Well, I assume the OMA flight is to connect with SFO and DCA etc... I'd would have thought they'd have skyway fly it, but you never know. Anyone have any word on the WI legislature desision on the property tax cut?

OMA already has 2 flights a day nonstop to DCA and both doing very well. This might be a way of providing more space from OMA to DCA without another flight. OMA also has nonstop service to Newark and LAX.

I just think that this their way of cementing their position as being based in the Upper Midwest region. I think Omaha and KC combined will be an effective central hub. Not much traffic at both of them with a good market.

How are they doing all this expansion? I thought they were short on pilots and had limited aircraft to use on new routes. Anyway I hope Midwest succeeds.

Although I'm not sure, they might be getting some of AirTran's DC9 aircraft.
