"The Bahrain International Airport is to be re-designed to handle an annual 12 million passengers by 2015, a top official said yesterday.
Ahmed Nehmat Ali, Assistant Undersecretary for Airport Services, told the opening session of the Airport Development, Expansion and Management Summit Middle East that this was the projected passenger traffic by that time and, keeping it in mind, two consultants had been asked to prepare detailed project reports."
You can read more on the Bahrain Int'l Airport Expansion thread at Skyscrapercity.com, many image renderings are included of both options for the expansion program. Nice to see the airport expansion will be A380-compliant!

Quoting B742 (Reply 1): It seems all of the Gulf major airports (BAH, DOH and DXB) are going through major development programmes, I wouln't be suprised if AUH is next
Surprised "The UK's Kohn Pederson Fox Associates has been announced the top finalist in the race for the job of master architect for the Midfield Terminal Complex of Abu Dhabi International Airport. "
Works are also underway on the airport's 2nd runway by Odebrecht Al Jaber, a UAE-Brazilian joint venture.
You can read more about this in a Gulf News article:

I’m not impressed with these plans, Bahrain needs to aim higher, and they don't go bigger and better in my opinion. Bahrain is small; it needs to excel in these factors, much more than Qatar or the UAE. Look at Singapore, small but an excellent airport. The design is nowhere near enough to the new Doha airport. BAH is facing serious competition with Doha and Dubai.
There is no time to lose. The current plans are no way sufficient enough to grab a major slice of the market in the region. Bahrain has to build an entirely new airport, with major land reclamation projects of the northern Manama coast.

Perhaps it's worth reminding our audience that Bahrain's forecasted budgets for the next decade do not even remotely compare to Qatar's whopping US $ 100 Billion infrastructure investments coming online in the next 10 years. Qatar is literally sitting on a huge gas field which may last up to 100 years. There is simply so much money there that they can't just sit and watch Dubai nearby with their arms folded. Qatar can afford to lose money for years, spending on its airport infrastructure and a loss-making airline which may, just may, break even by 2010.
Bahrain, on the other hand, has relatively healthy GDP growth figures which still place it amongst other emerging global economies. It's economy is well diversified into the financial and service sectors and its national carrier, Gulf Air, is long established and run on a commercial, profit-driven basis.
I think this new airport expansion is brilliant, and will just reinforce Bahrain Airport as a contemporary, comfortable airport with modern amenities. If you ask me, Bahrain Airport is much more passenger-friendly than Dubai Airport!
So no, BIGGER doesn't necessarily mean BETTER or more competitive.

Quoting EurostarVA (Reply 5): You mean bigger than the one at Blue Elephant ?
Much prefer the yacht club or trader vics if i have some extra cash in the pocket.
As for the airport i've tended to use the Dilmun lounge but the non smoking rules means you have to go to the little bar tucked away downstairs if you want a cancer stick.
As for the expansion it's about time not just for pax traffic but for ramp space too. The RAF VC10s leave this week due to lack of space!
