I just read this news in the local newspaper. Here are the highlights:
The new terminal in SXM is expected to open around mid-September. Everything is going as planned and the project in its entirety is about one month ahead of schedule. Government officials received an introductory tour in the new facility with an explanation of current activities on the platform, parking spaces and other services in the new terminal. Work on the new taxi and bus spaces are being done at the moment. The aircraft refeuling facilities will become much more efficient than it is now as the new feul tanks at the airport will be located on a new location. Work is also still ongoing on placing the tiles, electrical and mechanical systems such as elevators, air conditioning and the ceiling. The new luggage belts have been tested while the number of security personnel will increase with 45 people. The check-in counters are not fully operational yet although the 27 sales offices for the airlines are ready. The departure hall will have the largest restaurant. The main floor at ground level will have fastfood stores such as Domino's Pizza and Quizno's. In total the new terminal will have 39 sales units of which the majority will be located in the departure hall. There will be two automatic cash dispensers while wireless internet is possible throughout the entire building. At the start of operation only two of the four new jetways will be used as the old terminal building will have to be demolished before these remaining two jetways can be used. This will also take three months.
