BEA West London Air Terminal

In the 60's and 70's BEA had what was known as the West London Air Terminal. Does anyone know where in West London this was and whether the building still exists?

Heya,

It was opened on 6th October 1957 on Cromwell Road. Whether it is still their or not, i have no idea.

There is a Sainbury's super market on that site now. It's just down Cromwell Road from the Gloucester Road underground station. Next to Cromwell Hospital and across the street from the Marriott Hotel (where I used to stay before it was a Marriott..hehe).

IIRC there were two City Terminals back in the day... BEA had the one on Cromwell Road and there was also the BOAC Terminal which was just across from where Victoria Coach Station is now.

I remember the double decker BEA busses with their baggage trailers tagged on behind heading out for LHR - very noticeable with the old BEA logo and flag adorning them.

Again, IIRC, they closed both terminals down around the time that the underground was extended out to LHR.

Ahhh. the memories  old   biggrin

Yes, there was a BOAC city terminal near Victoria. Pan Am had one too in Semley Place, Victoria. Not sure what arrangements TWA had.

The former BOAC terminal in Victoria was Imperial House, built by BOAC's predecessor Imperial Airways in the 1930's.

It is extant and still very impressive, and is in use as the headquarters of the National Audit Office, so a visit there now might be more likely to focus on you being under weight than over weight.

If I recall correctly, BOAC also ran buses from there to Heathrow for passengers, but as they went to a different terminal than BEA used, I never used them. I think that the BEA buses also lasted for a time after the Heathrow tube extension was completed but as the onward connection from West London Air Terminal always involved much road crossing to get to from the tube station, it may have been replaced by the Airbus service around then.

The building that was BOAC's London Terminal near Victoria Rail Station is still there. IIRC it has a central tower with a 4-face clock and can be seen from trains as they approach Victoria Station, and can be seen from Victoria Street.

In those days, BOAC used Oceanic Terminal (now Terminal 3) at LHR and BEA used Terminal 2 (and later Terminal 1). Both airlines operated double-decker buses with trailers from the London Terminals to LHR. I think buses departed at 15-minute intervals during the day time. BOAC passengers could check-in at Victoria, and BEA passengers could check in at Cromwell Road. They would be given their boarding cards and their luggage would be taken care of until they arrived at their destination.

British Caledonian (and before them BUA) had an advantage over BOAC/BEA as their Central London Terminal was located immediately above the train platforms at Victoria Station. Passengers could check-in here, be issued with their boarding passes, relax in the business lounge and then take an escalator down to the platform to hop on a train that would take them direct to Gatwick Airport Station. The train journey to Gatwick was 40 minutes (later reduced to 30 minutes when the Gatwick Express started), whereas it took the double-decker buses an hour or longer to travel along the A4/M4 to LHR.

WLT (West London Terminal in BA parlance), included many offices for BA marketing, in the high rise block part of the building, Passenger Relations (called 'Correspondance) too and others.
This was in late 1983, early 1984, it finally shut in Spring 1984.
By then, Victoria Terminal was nearly empty, Australian/NZ Family Reunion Clubs being the few occupants before it shut too, just before WLT.

Very hepful - thanks for the information. Do you know if the building is still there or is there a Sainsbury's supermarket on the site now as suggested by one of the other respondents?

I think Sainsburys occupy the ground floor area, the high rise part-still there but who knows the occupants?
