Flybe have just announced they are to expand into Germany.

They will be operating to Dusseldorf and Hannover from Southampton! Great news for the south, and fills the gap which Air Berlin left when they transferred their Paderborn service to Bournemouth...

So the long expected expansion into Germany is finally becoming reality - this had been rumored for quite a while.

Both DUS and HAJ make very much sense - both airports are in the catchment area of British army bases, so the demand for VFR traffic should be there, and DUS is also in the center of a catchment area of potentially 10 Mio. customers within a 90 minutes drive.

Southampton airport is really expanding, from the end of october the airport will be welcoming theese 3 daily flights to Germany plus , with the launch of BMI from the airport , 4 daily flights to Amsterdam. But can the airport really cope much more, check-in queues can be horrific and tarmac space is limited.

Two hours in a prop might scare away some potential pax.
At least that was my impression when BA-whatever ran that ATR72 between HAJ and LGW (which indeed was not the most comfortable plane).

OTOH, BA left quite a gap in service to areas south of London, when they withdrew their LGW-service from HAJ.
But starting the route in winter will mean that not too many leisure travellers from HAJ use the route, as the south of England is more a summer destination for vacationers from Germany.

You are right. However, don't forget about the potential of business travellers, which will be quite important at least on the double-daily DUS rotation.

Had heard rumours of the DUS service, but must admit HAJ is a bit of a surprise. AB who have moved to BOH may suffer from this aggressive BE move.

Great news though I agree with the issues of check-in and ramp space.

I would have thought that HAM would be another possibility given the large shipping and sailing presence in both cities. Perhaps not enough demand to fill a Q400 though.

I suppose, they will start with a Q400 because of its lower passenger capacity and probably move to one of the larger jets in summer next year, if the route is successful.

This new route is even an attractive alternative for people who want to travel between both German cities and London - travel time from Southend Airport to Waterloo Station is 1h10 at a fare of 30 GBP. Quite comparable to STN-London and you don't have to endure the longish queues at Stansted.

Did you mean to say Southampton airport?  Wink Your point is a good one though, the railway station at Southampton airport is very convenient, just 99 steps from the terminal building according to the airport's website!

I doubt that there SOU has the shortest railway station - airport connection in Europe, since many airports have the railway station on the lowest floor of the terminal like AMS, OSL, CGN, ....

I sampled SOU the last Friday in March - and yes the queues were horrific that afternoon - almost 40 minutes queuing to check in for our flight to Manchester.

I would have thought the Dash 8 will do this route, as the 146 will be being phased out once the 195s arrive. As the 195s haven't arrived yet, they wont be doing the route at first.

When are they hoping to start this route, and will there be any German routes from Exeter?

This choice of equipment surprised me as well - maybe BE is currently a bit short on Q400's, so they chose to employ the BAE? I don't think that such an unknown niche route would warrant two daily double rotations on a 100-seater right away. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it works out for BE.
