Outside of Russia and the CIS area, are there any other airports like SHJ? Airports that are home to a lot of Russian freighters and older aircraft? The pictures that I see in the database of SHJ are amazing to see. Smokey IL76s, AN12s, the odd B707, IL18s and others. SHJ with it's list of aircraft types and operators seems to be a one of a kind airport.

Sadly SHJ is slowly but surely losing it's character.

Air Arabia is growing its fleet of A320s and Phoenix (the traditional Il-18 operator) is now becoming a 737 and 767 operator. I think there are now less than 5 Il-18s based at SHJ. Very few 707s still operate.

SHJ is still a major Il-76 airport and of course lots of maintenance on older Russina types.

The first time I visited SHJ nearly half the movements were Il-18s. The last time I went, I didn't see one Il-18 in the air. SHJ is always worth a visit because you can never be sure what will be there, but it's definitely a case of quality over quantity. You have to be patient to spend a whole day there!

Ras Al Khaimah

There used to be ramp tours available, hence all the great shots taken at SHJ, but sadly this has been stopped now, because of the development work going on there. I doubt they will start again, as the UAE airports are extremely anal when it comes to allowing photography.

Thanks, later today I'll take a look at Ras Al Khaimah in the database to see if there is any interesting pics from there. Sadly being in the US, I may never get to see these birds in person.
