Does anyone know if the creation of Etihad was a response by Abu Dhabi leaders to the ever-increasing influence of Dubai, and consequently Emirates? I just realized that Abu Dhabi withdrew recently from the 3-nation partnership of Gulf Air (leaving Oman and Bahrain to run it). Is there a story behind that withdrawal as well or is it just that Abu Dhabi wanted to go alone? It's quite fascinating that 2 of the emirates of the UAE are now running world class international airlines. Also, on Etihad's website, they mention that they serve Toronto...yet I have never seen any photos in the airliners.net database. Is this a future destination?

Abu Dhabi is the master emirate, and richer. Its is the official flag carrier, EK is not.

So if the two want to go to a port, normally the flag carrier will get preference.

I did hear the two princes wanted to see who has got the biggest train set, the airlines I dont think would be sustainable if they were not based where they are with the very generous state assistance which is not generally available to other airlines in their home countries.

I did hear that EY recently has a across the board pay cut, unannounced. I also hear if you leave, they garnish all your bank accounts, and confiscate all your possessions.

Also hear they fired 5 captains for raising safety concerns.

And lastly, getting a ticket seems problematic, they have to courier a paper ticket to you.

Not the sort of place I would work.

That is interesting information Zeke and thanks for pointing out those basic UAE facts, but I don't think that any of the questions were addressed. I never said that UAE had 2 official carriers, merely that it has 2 international ones, based in 2 different emirates. I'm more interested in whether Etihad was created as a result of Abu Dhabi trying to catch up to Emirates. I think EK's growth has been really impressive.

Regarding the subsidies, I think you're right in some respect, but their geographic location as a transit point (Europe-Asia, Europe-Australia, Europe-Africa) is incredibly advantageous.

I had an interview in 2004 for a job based at EY's head office. The offer was good (far from very good to leave my current job) but there was something I didn't like when I was there. I don't know how to summarise it but I would say "lack of professionalism" is a far way of putting it.

They garnish your bank account? Are you sure??

I will fly Etihad from London to Bangkok early july to try them, have chosen the dates so I get on an A-332, 77W ánd A-345. While at first the booking machine on their website seems to work nice, it later annoyed me that I had to fax copies of my creditcard and a signed statement as their online CC processing didn't work or something. I pick up the paper ticket at departure which doesn't seem so bad.


nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Wonder why EK allowed EY to get into YYZ ahead of them...? EK seem to order and maintain aircraft by the dozens.....

Meanwhile, EY is advertising heavily on TV here, to get a share of the S.Asia bound traffic, which can very conveniently connect thru AUH...

I was under the impression that they started this flight a while back flying via BRU

I've recently flown EY on AUH-BKK in J and was really impressed with the onboard hardware. The seats were certainly the best in the market. Service was ok though inconsistent. To MEA-707's comment, the very young (and probably inexperienced) senior cabin crew seemed more interested in filing her nails than in serving customers and didn't make a single (not a single) appearance in the cabin throughout the flight. On airlines I fly most frequently that would probably be a sack-able offence! Thankfully for me, what she lacked in professionalism her colleagues made up for with courtesy and politeness

Strictly speaking you are correct and they make a big deal out of the fact that they are the official airline etc.etc. But I would think that in most passengers' mind EK is definitely the one that matters. That is unlikely to change until a few years have passed. The brand equity that EK has built and its size will be hard to cath up with. My feeling is that EY's real competitors are most probably QR and to a lesser extent GF since those are all airlines that are trying to build (or re-build) their reputation and are fighting each other for the traveller's mind-share

Emirates wanted to fly this route only if it was granted a license for daily flights .

This is a very popular route for Indo-pakistani passengers where they can load up on GOLD on their way from/to South Asia . Emirates ( whether AUH or DXB ) are known to sell top quality Gold either in their local markets or the duty free shops .

Even the name ( Emirates ) say it all . But Etihad does not ring any bells to customers ears .

EY are in the process of implementing electronic ticketing. Give it a couple of months.

Except if their customers speak Arabic (which most of them do) - Etihad is an anglicised form of the Arabic word for "united" as in United Arab Emirates. Or so I'm told.

That will be quite hard to see an EY plane on the database with YYZ mentioned as they arrive/depart ath night times (21.00-23.00 IIRC).
