Futures For Low-Cost Airlines....

Due to the ever increasing expansion of low-cost carriers such as WestJet here in Canada and Ryanair in Europe, what are the chances that they expand their fleet with larger types of aircraft? Ryanair apparently is considering expansion into Asia, and WestJet here has already penetrated the American market with services to and from major hubs in Canada. Whose to say they wont start servies to LHR now? Whats stopping these carriers from operating larger aircraft? - dv747

It seems to me that one of the formulas for success is simplicity. A single type of plane, simple fare structures, service that matches demand and straight-forward service. Many of the post regulation darlings have gone belly up for wanting to expand to quickly with larger aircraft and new markets. There has been a lot of talk on the threads as to whether or not Jet Blue is losing its competitive edge by the introduction of another type of aricraft.

Remember, those of us who travel on business -- we must have flexibility - if a flight is cancelled, we must be put on another flight - same departure/same destination. Yes, it's sad if a leisure traveller misses a day of vacation, but those of u s who travel on business must get to our destination

That's why LCC's fail with the business traveller, but they're great for the vacation traveller

I would think that they would fail more with the vacationer and not the business traveller, mainly because the business traveller can depend on another flight going to the same place sooner. Take Southwest, they have flight going from one destination to the same place multiple times during the day. As does Westjet (Hamilton to Montreal) etc. Those cutomers taking trips have the same time contraints, only more of a headache because they are usually making connections or have to be at a certain place on time. Am i wrong? If YOUR late, take the one leaving in 30 minutes. If they are late...they miss their connection in LHR and wait 1+ day in a hotel for the next flight to Kuala Lumpur. Now THATS an inconvenience...however.....north american LCC's dont go to Europe. I may be wrong, but ive travelled as both alot, and i mean alot, and LCC's seem dependable

And i completely agree with you, but there has to be some way for such great services to become available to those who want to go abroad.

I think i could see it happening. Canada is an ever expanding country. Its huge and has 3 populated and economically strong urban centres. Virgin seems to see the American market as a lucritive business, so whats stopping them from coming to Canada and serving the three (very far apart) cities?

Your arguments about frequency and flexibility are right, but you cannot just apply this to any LCC. In Europe, easyJet has high frequencies on many business routes, like AMS-STN, AMS-LGW, LGW-MXP, LGW-GVA, etc, they offer 4-6 daily flights. Business travelers are an important part of the traffic on these routes.

The future of LCCs? Well, to begin with, they are going to start calling them airlines rather than LCCs. There will be a separate sectors for business only airlines, charters and maybe international airlines. The term legacy carrier may apply for awhile but that will disappear as the airlines do unless they change their ways and their unions.
