US To India: New Low Cost Carrier

Rahul Puranik backed by equity investors from America and UK has sought the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) nod to set up this new airline venture, christened Sapphire Airways. "It will be a venture with $100 million start-up equity capital.

The airline, he said, intends to use the Indo-US Open Sky arrangement to start direct flights between India and America within the next 15-18 months.

"It will be a full-service airline offering discount fare travel. We intend to launch the airline with a direct service from US to India, connecting at least four metros Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. In the next phase, our plan is to expand to Africa and Asia, to connect Nairobi, South Africa, Dubai and China," Puranik said.

The airline, which has appointed Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation to conduct its project feasibility, has shortlisted Boeing 777 and Airbus A340 as the preferred aircraft for its start-up fleet.

Reminds me of "bance air" from the UK. Let's see if either of these is able to start and make money!

makes sense! US is a mature market and starting a international without any domestic feed or tie-up should be difficult. Only scenario that would work is where US carriers are not interested in flying with their own metal.

Indigo is nowhere in sight, will watch this one too.

O&D means origin and destination passengers. This means they are not connecting passengers. So why would they need to "build up their feeds" on both ends?

ya, their business model would be like that of airlines of island/small countries like EK, SQ and CX. All of them cater to O&D besides fifth freedom. With one exception that they would need so some sort of arrangement with domestic carriers of India. At least to MAA.  Silly

I think I need to rephrase what I said earlier:

What I meant was that operating based on O&D alone (between any 2 city pairs) will mean that you have a greater chance of failure/less loads/yields. Once you have a service between 2 city pairs, it's important to tie up with "feed providers" at both ends, so your original "O&D service" can benefit from higher traffic/loads/yields. I know it sounds like a contradiction, but I guess what I'm saying is that for a small airliner trying to connect 2 massive countries, there's no such thing as O&D traffic only.
