Here it is, Finnair's first "quattro", OH-LQA (cn 058, ex G-VFLY). Cabin modification, painting and crew training is taking place all at the same time to get the new bird ready for it's first service in AY colours on Monday 19th June. New seat covers for both J and Y are coming from UK, and they will be installed by July, when she begins her dedicated HEL-PVG-HEL service. The red Virgin arm-rests and other leather seat decorations will stay in J-cl, as will the IFE, with those tiny monitors in Y-cl. A big leap forward for AY in this 12 year old plane are the crew rest areas, with 2 pilot bunks behind the flight deck and 5 CA bunks in a container under mid-cabin floor. Finnair says that the plane is generally in good condition and well maintained. She will be flown by Finnair and Airbus pilots, until Finnair has enough of it's own A340 qualified crew to handle the rotations. Forward part of Y-cl has brand new seats, in place of VS premium eco cabin, with a huge legroom on row 21 (bulkhead) and a tight pitch at the back. But seats will be newly distributed when schedules permit, so that the pitch will be closer to that on Finnair's MD-11s'.

Excellent Pictures OHLBU, thanks for sharing it.

Hopefully we will get to see the full color scheme soon. It's also good to see another A340 operator.

That bright red would make me feel sick. I wonder how the VS pax can stand those colors. Needles to say; I have never flown Virgin.

I think the mix of colours in the economy cabin particularly uphauling. How could someone pick such a combination?

It's always interesting to fly some time with another airlines and to get to know their routes, product, atmosphere.

Nice pictures BTW, The A340 will look beautifully in AY's colours, as in fact she does in EVERY company's colours.

New seats in the forward Y cabin?

The seats are the same design as in the rest of eco, just that they are newly-manufactured to replace the premium eco-seats which Finnair (sadly) does not need.

Holy Crap! I have never seen such small PTVs before. How can anybody see anything on those things??? I very ugly interior if you ask me, but once Finnair has added their own touch, I have full faith in them that they will impress me greatly. Thanks for sharing the pics and have some more to show when the colors are finally finished!  Smile

It was one of these:

You can see the PTV's because they are right infront of your nose VS Y config is nothing more than a charter flight in the disguise of a a scheduled carrier

Well, to play devil's advocate for a moment, aren't these some of the very oldest VS 343s? I think the cabin product on the 346 and newer/updated 744s is very different (V:port, etc.)

Correct, the Finnair A343 has the old VS "Arcadia" IFE, this is now left on only one VS bird, G-VAEL, which is due to leave the VS fleet in a couple of months.

All the rest of VS's fleet have either Nova (@ LGW), or Odyssey (on 2 x LGW 747's, 1 x LHR 747 and the remaining 5 x A343's) or the excellent V:Port on the balance of the 747 fleet at LHR, and all of the A346's.

This has to be.... the ugliest damn plane I have ever seen. Great for Finnair and all but when I first looked at the pics.. i thought they were just unfinished interiors....do people have taste lol? I find Virgins colors classy and delicate , but this is like flying "Barney and Friends" episode or something .

I remember coming back from the States on a 747-200 (VS) and the PTVs were like that. I can't understand why anyone bothered to watch them. You had to strain your eyes to see.  Sad

Seriously guys.

I flew on G-VFLY from LHR to MIA on December 2003 and the PTV's were not that bad, at least is something and better than nothing.

As for the cabin colours, they did not make me feel sick at any moment, in fact I find it rather relaxed and welcoming and adds that "hip touch" Virgin is famous for, seat pitch was not that bad either the seats design makes it easy to slide your legs under the seat in front of you and voila! comfy. the worst pitch I experienced was in an AF 744 MIA-CDG on July 2002, even FR had a better pitch then!

Congrats to Finnair on their new "toy"

Really funny to see those small PTVs !!! But after all let's not forget that VS was one of the very first airline to fit those PTVs on long-haul planes.

Godd luck AY with the A340 !!

Exactly, as Flying Belgian says, VS was among the first to introduce PTVs in Economy, along with SQ, so these are among the first introduced in airline service - in Y Class. I've flown VS in Y Class, on the 744 (to MCO and back) and in all fairness to them, while the screens were admittedly small, the IFE was excellent and I think it would be wrong to rate them as a charter service. Also, I found the colours warm and restful, rather than loud.

And if you want bigger PTVs, try the VS A340-600s!

Anyway, good luck to AY with the A340s. Hopefully, Airbus will be sort them with "bridging aircraft" to make up for the A350 delay.

Wow, VS 742s had PTVs 6 years ago, but UA 744s don't have them today! However they are finally changing them which is way over due. Although there wasn't much they could have done while they were trying to emerge from Chapter 11...

Does anyone know Finnair's exact plans for this ex-Virgin A343 aircraft?

Virgin acquired this rather early-build A343 around the same time that it placed its A343/A350 order....thus, Finnair will be flying this older A343 side-by-side with newly delivered, far more advanced A343s that will come directly from Airbus. Does Finnair plan to keep this older A343 once it has received delivery of its new A343/A350 fleet (Finnair has stated that it is sticking with the A350 - but thats another story) or will this aircraft be retired with the MD11s?
