CRJ900X Update - No Farnborough Launch

ATI reports that BBD announced this week at a 3-day media briefing in Montreal that it is still evaluating whether to revive the CSeries in place of a possible CRJ900X. The CSeries mock-up will complete a world tour at Asian Aerospace in February. A Board decision is expected by the end of the year.

The 900X study, which has progressed to the "customer consultation stage", includes a 7.5% increase to the 900's wing trailing edge, a 2% to 5% increase in thrust, and larger windows. The landing gear would be strengthened and carbon brakes could replace the steel ones. The 900X could have an 8% to 10% CASM improvement over the the 900.

Nothing would please me more than to see a BBD product that can compete effectvely on the world stage. However, being Canadian means that I know my people, and they will be thier own worst enemies on this one and most probably self destruct. (read a Tory -are they even real Tories anymore, I have no idea what separates the Western biggots from the authentic Conservatives anymore- will no doubt forbid any federal help).

I know I know, its all so morbid and negative, but after 30 ears of watching world leading Canadian comapinies evaporate before my very eyes, not in the face of stiff international competition but because we somehow lack the strength to see the world off with skill, perserverence and intellect, I am skeptical.

I hope I am proven dearly wrong, and that Bombardier will kick some serious Embraer (and Sukhoi and Boing and Airbus) a$$.

I hear Lester Pearson rolling in his grave whispering "Avro Arrow..."

Did the article mention fuselage length? Could this be the four-seat stretch, or the 12-16-seat stretch? Bigger windows sounds nice...

While the fall-back plan for a cancelled C-series was to stretch exist platforms, I do not think customers are cooperating. The Q400 stretch is much more likely than CRJ stretch.

Is BBD actually going after customers? With the bid that came out from Midwest, I could possibly see ZW looking into the plane. We want to find homes for 50 seaters so we can expand in the US Airways Express family....if we actually bid on the Midwest, and I believe we are, and if we get it - this could open the market for us to fly 90 seaters for US. Would be totally cool to see us doing something like that.

Other than ZW, I can only see Mesa actually ordering them in the US. I think carriers in Europe may like it.

Yes, BBD is indeed considering larger cabin windows for the CRJ900X... not "modified window reveals".

FYI, the new Challenger 605 has 5 cm taller windows that have been moved 6.5 cm higher than on the 604. As you know, the 700 and 900 already have a higher window placement than on the 200. Increasing the size on the 900X by 5 cm would be a minor modification.

well, if they are considering this, then I would imagine this change is across the 700-900 product line?? An inch on either side could probably be squeezed in.

I think Planemaker wrote in another thread a while back that BBD didn't have any firm orders for the CRJ900 but launched it anyway. As of 30th April this year 110 x CRJ900 frames had been ordered (15 x -705 + 95 x -900), so perhaps they might make a deal with AtlasJet for 10 x CRJ900X just to get production started and then sales will trickle in as other airlines won't have the hassle of being a launch customer (with the teething troubles that inevitably come during the first 2-4 months of operations)...

If BBD want EIS in 2008 they better start production soon. On a side note, 2008 will be an exciting year for the aviation industry, with the 787 and RRJ (and CRJ900X) going into service... any other airframes debuting that year also?

Yes, that is correct. They launched it after they cancelled the BRJ-X when the BRJ-X lost the Lufthansa and Crossair competitions and no other airline showed any interest in the BRJ-X.

No, the 200 never had the window height changed. You might be aware that no one thought that the CRJ was going to sell more than a few hundred when it was launched (many thought the program would flop!) Imagine, when sales reached 400 it was being hailed as a spectacular program! However, because of "numerous complaints", it was easy to design in a revised window placement on the 700 as it had to go through certification anyway. And on the 700 they not only moved the window further up on the fuselage, compared to the 200, but they also lowered the floor of the 700 further increasing the height of the windows vis-a-vis pax seating.

What's the deal with the C-Seires revival floating in the industry? Are they appealing to a single customer or did they just give up seaking any participation on the RRJ?

Just seems like a very peculiar chain of events...
