Their is word on the Pensacola, Florida Delta ramp that Delta AirLines will begin flying the 757 into Pensacola in September, apparently once a day as one of the ATL originators and terminators
My question is; has anyone heard of such news? And when can a seat map be available in the reservation system?
I know to you ATL, CVG and SLC folks hearing about a 757 isnt a big deal to you all, but when Pensacola Florida hears word about a 757 coming to town, the entire airport gets excited, its a pretty big deal, a break from the boaring 88, 717, and rj routine...
any info would be great.

Interesting that one knows anything about Delta's operations or schedules in September?
So I thought I would ask again, anyone know anything?

They're flying 75's into Birmingham AL now. I was on one last nite. It was an old Song bird. When landing, we had to do a couple of wide circles to slow down enough to get it on the ground. He seemed to come in a little hot and took it all the way to the end of the runway. Still, lots of fun!

Happy Flying All

I don't think that they circle to slow down. Sometimes ATC will give you the "Slam Dunk" maneuver. That wouldn't work on a short runway but even so, with engines idle and holding altitude, the 757 will loose airspeed pretty quick.
Birmingham has a 10,000' runway and a 7,000' runway. Runway distance shouldn't be a factor. It is still AWESOME to get some heavy traffic!!!!

He did some pretty unusual maneuvers before getting it on the ground. I've flown in on "Mad Dogs" and 73's and they were pretty tame landings but this was a little more exciting ride...

Could theorethically happen, but I doubt it, especially given that the September schedule is far from being finalised.

DL has been flying the 757 into BHM for decades, including at a time when they still had their multistop Southeastern flights between ATL and DFW on mainline.

DL is also flying the 757 into JAC from SLC. That runway is as long as the airports elevation. About 6700ft IIRC

What you are describing sounds like S-turns which ATC either requests or approves a pilot to do for spacing arrivals. It doesn't slow the plane down, it simply keeps an aircraft from gaining on another aircraft ahead of it.

Am familiar with the S-turn approach. Have seen the video of the DL 73 doing it as it was landing in LGA a while back. We covered the same area twice before landing. You could see the airport as we circled the first time and then he came back over it again. There could have been traffic on the active and consequently he had to do a go around...at any rate, it was a fun ride over from ATL.

Happy Flying!

Not sure if it'll happen, but I'll throw it out there anyway:

A friend of mine who's a gate agent for Delta in CMH said recently that there's a "strong possibility" that DL will bring back the 757 to/from ATL in the near future. I'd love to see it, as it'd be a nice change from the MD-88s I'm always on. We just picked up a few 738s on CMH-ATL for the summer.

They also used to run 757s CMH-CVG, but I doubt that'll happen again.

I don't think DL has had 757 service into BHM for several years now, mainly been a mix of MD-88, 737-200, 737-800 with an occasional CRJ thrown in, so this is certainly big news. At one time the 757 was the bird of choice between ATL and many south-eastern cities, including BHM, CHS, GSP, SAV, and TYS just to name a few, maybe those days are coming back.

ATL-BHM-JAN-DFW was one of those weird Delta routings served for many years as you said, with the 727-200 and later the 757. I think it has been at least 4-5 years since this flight operated...

It would be great to have a DL 757 flight into PNS. Probably just replace a MD-88 flight with a 738 flight, though.

When you force everyone in MOB to fly out of PNS, this is what you'll need to serve both markets. This probably has more to do with aircraft utilization than anything. It wouldn't suprise me if they park the thing in PNS for the night and make the flight the real late flight.

Anyone think anything bigger will come in to RIC? We used to have 738's from CVG serving lunches and dinners in F (hah!). Now we get CRJ's 3 and 4 times a day.

We used to get 738's from ATL. This is what I think may be a possibility. I think they ran the 738 shuttle back in November for a couple of weeks or so, but then I never saw it again.

Any chance for some E170's either?

Delta has not loaded their September schedule into Deltamatic yet....Most probably this will happen within the next 3 weeks. The current schedule is valid til 31AUG. The schedule in the computer from Sept. is the old schedule from May.

The schedule development people in ATL advise the station managers about changes.

The "walls have ears" or "loose lips sink ships." motto applies here and thats how these threads and rumors get started or get out of control.
