SFO/CUN was discussed in an earlier thread, but
the application also mentions service from LAX to La Paz.

Interesting since La Paz didn't really work out before.

Hikes: Finally we announce the SFO-CUN. I knew it was coming! Just couldn't post my sources!

My stepmom in the Bay Area was screaming for CUN service, she e-mailed sales multiple times! I think she was more excited then I was when I told her the DOT app was sent.

Nope. 3x weekly 737-400s, starting October 30.

Application is available here.

I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

A SFO-MEX would be good, but competition against UA and MX would be tough!!

I remember when AS began LAP service in 1998. When did they pull out?

Dear Rojo:

SFO-MEX would not be good as I don't think the Bay Area could support a 3rd SFO-MEX flight. If Alaska put a SFO-GDL flight now that would do better. Loads of flights from Mexicana at SFO are not at full capacity year round, where as at OAK & SJC loads for Mexicana are very good. Only time loads are high in SFO are Holidays and Summer vacations. I think Mexicana just brings this flight as a connecting flight for people from Asia.

As it is so far MX charges up the butt for flying to Mexico, I don't understand paying $600 year round for a flight from the Bay Area-Mexico(while) UA will charge you half as much with anticipation. MX is a rip off, I would also want MX to use better planes on the way to SFO. I always get a crappy plane that shakes so much on the way here, and that's on the ground during take off and in the air. Scary !!!!

I think awhile back, MX had non-stop to Mexico from SEA and it was sucessful. And i think now service was dropped. Why was it dropped and why not AS have non-stop SEA-Mexico service? If they do, why not have alot more service to alot more cities from SEA? Robert NWDC10

Don't look for any service from SFO to MEX/GDL anytime soon. There is one little key in the talk about that service. The flight would be a red-eye if we were to start it. The issue there being that SFO requires that international flights leave from the Intl terminal. This requires to much additional staffing. This was the hook up the first time around with SFO-CUN. The original plan was a 7am departure, but SFO doesn't staff the international counters till later in the morning. If you had a 7am flight, they'd be required to staff the counter from 5am. But the station couldn't get the budget for additional staffing. The new 820am time works much better. If Alaska were to start red-eye flights to Mexico, it would require reopening the international counter at 9pm or so. I doubt we will ever see that happen.

How far is La Paz from Los Cabos? I was under the impression that they were very close to each other. Am I just mistaken?

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I think it is about a 2 hour drive, so maybe a 30 minute flight, if that.

AS already flies to PVR and SJD 2x daily on some days and flights leave nearly full daily. SFO only served on SAT by UA and flight a 757 full. AS will do just fine sfo cun...

Briguy:

My point in writting in here was to talk about the SFO-MEX flight that ROJO mentioned. I don't doubt that AS can fill flights to SJD & PVR as they are good leasure destinations. MEX ( Mexico City) I don't think SFO-Mexico City route could yield enough passengers at all times. Yes SFO-CUN will be a good route. I talked to the reservations agents at Mexicana and they mentioned that the loads at SFO are lower than the other Bay Area airports. I didn't say anything about the SFO-CUN flight.

Oakjam, I have to agree with you. And personally as said above with the addition of that problem, the loads wouldn't be there. MEX has never seemed a strong market from SFO for anyone!
