So says www.skyliner-aviation.de , unfortunately the link does not provide any more info. In the fleet movements, it reports 777-2Q8(ER) PP-VRA as seized by ILFC upon completing MUC-GRU-GIG service on 19/20 June.

Can anyone confirm/deny?

Does that mean that PP-VRB will also be seized since it is also owned by ILFC?

Honestly, this is really getting tiring... All US (and other intl?) suspended, yet they try to tell people they aren't shut down?

I like RG and will lose a free award ticket (have a bunch of Smiles), but the writing on the wall has been there for way too long. Sad.

Snag a ticket on another Star Alliance carrier while you still can. Once it's ticketed, you may even be able to change it to something you actually want to fly later on.

I'm actually missing 1800 miles, and it was (almost) all out of the 55555 Star Alliance Promo, so it's ok. I cashed in 3 tickets, if Smiles are usable with another airline (or even Varig!) in the future, that's great news but I don't feel like pushing it at this moment.

I got a nice LHR-CPH MD-11 flight, three nice awards and have almost another one - if it's there another day in the future, great, if not, too bad. I really hope RG would survive, but keeping it on life support with int'l ops cancelled - let it die.

It is all over the news in Brazil, and on RG´s website.

It has suspended int´l flights to MXP, MUC, MAD, CDG, JFK, LAX, MEX, MVD, ASU and BOG. It has also cut MIA from 2 to one daily flight.

International flights are still being operatade to the following destinations: MIA (daily), FRA (2daily), LHR (daily), EZE (4daily), LIM (daily), SCL (daily), VVI (daily) and CCS (6 weekly).

The domestic network has been reduced to São Paulo (both GRU and CGH), Rio de Janeiro (both GIG and SDU), Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Belém, Manaus, Foz do Iguaçu, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Fernando de Noronha, Florianópolis, Macapá and Brasilia. That means that flights to Belo Horizonte (CNF and PLU), Boa Vista, Goiânia, Natal, Petrolina and Vitória, have also been axed.

Well that is really sad to see such a great and traditional airline die.
Just wondering who will gonna serve the Brazilian market afterwards.
I guess TAM is going to rule the domestic market but who will fly all the international routes out of GRU/GIG???

GOL and TAM will share the domestic market, TAM will probably pick up the Int'l slack once they can get their hands on some a/c, Gol might pick up some more intra- regional international flights, and other international carriers such as TAP, BA, AA, LAN etc will probably be allowed to increase capacity temporaily, until the void left by RG is re-filled. Great news for TAM and GOL- the future looks even more bright than it was before (not that it wasn't bright before!). Sad day for RG- I wish all the RG employees God's choicest blessings...

O Globo ( www.oglobo.com.br ) is obviously following the story quite closely. Very sad images of what was the first airline I ever flew on (and certainly among the best), not unalike those of VASP's final days barely 17 months ago...

O Globo also states that more than 50% of VARIG's flights have been cancelled, and market share is down to <10%.

I checked in so many pass-riding RG employees while working as a UA CSR; I wish them the very best and hope TAM, GOL and any other airline that picks up the slack takes them into consideration.

From our Internal Travel Dept

American Express Global Business Travel has been advised:

Brazilian airline cancels flights:

The embattled Brazilian airline Varig has been forced to cancel 67 of its 180 daily flights amid mounting fears of financial collapse.
The move came just a day after a bankruptcy judge agreed to sell the airline to a consortium of Varig workers and two foreign investors.
This saved Varig from immediate liquidation, but the consortium must now find $75m (£40m) by Friday.
The judge has warned that without this first payment the buyout will fail.
The NV Participacoes, which represents Varig workers and two foreign investors, has agreed to pay $449m for the struggling airline.
Reports in the Brazilian media say it is appealing to Brazil's National Development Bank for a loan to cover the first deposit required for the sale.
Brazil's national airport authority has said it will begin demanding that Varig pays its airport fees every day, in cash.
The news came as the country's civil aviation authorities met other airlines to divide up Varig's routes should it cease to fly.
Increased competition
Varig has been under bankruptcy protection for a year.
It was the top airline in Brazil until 2004, but was then overtaken by TAM and later by Gol.
The airline has suffered years of financial problems because of rising costs and growing low-cost competition.
It now has just 16.7% of the domestic market, but remains the leading Brazilian carrier internationally, with a 66.4% share.

Flights from Brazil to Milan, Munich, Madrid, Paris, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Montevideo, Asuncion and Bogota are temporarily suspended," said the company.

"Flights from Brazil to Frankfurt, London, Buenos Aires, Lima, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Santiago de Chile and Caracas are operating as usual," the company added.
---------------------------------------------------

So I guess we will find out in about 12 to 36 hours as to what further action will be taken.

Miami is not suspended. It is, however, being reduced from 2x to 1x daily. The initial media story took this as Varig was suspending Miami, but that is not the case.
