Does anybody know why NWA wanted what was the DC-10-20 to be renamed the DC-10-40? Thanks.

Because JAL and NW balked at the -20 designation sighting that it made it seem less of a plane than the -30. JAL and NW were/are the only operators of the -20 renamed -40

Has everyone noticed that even though there were few P&W powered 40 series DC-10s built, it is the only version to have never had a mishap?

Yes, N312RC, that's what I thought. What are the enhancements of the 20/40 series over the 10/30 series besides the PW engines?

Have you ever considered that the laws of probability dictate that if there were fewer -20/-40's built then they will be involved in fewer incidents.

I suggest you look at the stats for the ENTIRE JT9 series Vs the ENTIRE CF6 series for the true picture.

So why wasn't the DC-10-15 called the -20?

The DC-10-15 was built to the requirements of Aeromexico and Mexicana. They asked for an aircraft that could operate in hot and high conditions. The -15 is the series -10 fuselage with the GE CF6's that were used on the -30. Only seven dash 15's were built!

Just a little background info. The 15 wasnt called the 20 because NW's 20's that were redesignated 40's were still 20's. Utter confusion to follow. Think about it, the 15 was pretty much half of a 30. with the engines and all.
