I had a chance to tour some portion of the new terminal today. I don't have any pictures as I was not permitted to use my camera. But, to say the least this terminal is what the capital city deserves, in my opinion. It is not going to be as big as IST, but still it will have ample space; lots of windows and lots of open spaces.

Just cannot wait until I take a flight from this terminal... the only drawback is going to be no more walks to the aircraft as I did to my AtlasJet CRJ900 flight this afternoon.

Hi Bahadir,
I posted this link with photos recently, here it is again:

There, it mentions the capacity will be 10mil pax a year, and completion by October 06. Also connecting highways to the city center. How many gates?

The new terminal looks really good... It was about time that they did some work at ESB. I wonder if the crew got a new and nicer room as well  Smile

Bahadir: How was your flight with the CRJ 900? I flew it last month en route BJV-IST and I was extremely impressed with it. Nice cabin, fantastic climb performance (felt like a jet fighter).I found AtlasJet to be a very good airline...

I don't like CRJs. Period. I had my share of flights with CRJ200s (2 hrs +) and the cabin is tight for a person like me (180 cm 115kgs). So, 40-45 minute flight on it was just about I can endure. You guys in Turkey may be excited about them, but I have been flying them in US since Comair got them first. Nothing special from my end  Smile

On the other hand, I agree with you wholeheartedly; AtlasJet is becoming a very good airline with high levels of service. They have been consistantly on time, good crew, good service airline.

Wish the government changed their communist approach and allow private airlines compete with TK on IST-ESB route. Currently KK has only a single flight on each direction.

Is this a big increase in compare to the current situation?
If yes, are there any plans to increase flights as well?
For example, in winter time there are only 2 TK flights between ESB and AMS per week. Now during the summer, they operate daily, will these become year round or is the demand not there?

TK plans to by pass some of the IST trafic to ESB. Interestingly enough the terminal is called "TAV Anatolia". So, expect some more ESB flying for Turkish families trying to reach other places within central anatolia and some of the Black Sea coast. I am not sure if that will justify a year around service to some European hubs though..

Like Bahadir mentioned TK is planning on building up activities in the coming years at both Ankara and Izmir by providing routes that bypass IST.

Ankara however even being the countries capital provides for significantly less demand for European and other international routes compared to Istanbul. THY going back into the 1970s has operated "isci" (worker) flights primarily to Germany successfully, however outside of this demand particularly in the winter months is very soft for European services. The only way I could see TK manage to build ESB European flights is to properly time domestic connections and feed traffic over ESB to cities on the Black Sea, Eastern Turkey and Southeastern Mediterranean coast.

A good perspective on Ankara's traffic demand is to view the lack of European airlines serving the city. Only LH, OS and recently started BA(BMED) link the city with Europe while near every countries carrier is represented at IST.
