Seems funny that after recent (BA/VS) events Nigerian officials are messing BA around over flights to/from the country.

Anyone know the deal ?

FEDERAL Government, yesterday grounded British Airways (BA) Boeing 747 aircraft at the Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for violating operational guidelines.

Government, it was learnt, withheld permission for the aircraft to return to London, having landed in Lagos Wednesday night.

A source at the Lagos Airport who pleaded for anonymity told Daily Champion that federal government's action might have been prompted by non-adherence by BA to new directive on frequency allocated to it.

Government, it would be recalled recently directed BA to only operate seven daily evening flights per week on the Lagos-London route as well as seven daily morning flights per week on the Abuja-London route.

Before the directive, the British carrier operates 14 weekly flights (morning and evening) on the Lagos-London route.

But the airline appealed to the government for more time to meet the directive, though it described it as a contravention to the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

According to an official of the airline, Federal Government's insistence on full and immediate compliance to the order will amount to thousands of its passengers, who had already booked for flights.

Reacting to yesterday's development, BA in a statement issued by SY and T Communications said that the aircraft, which was refused permission to fly back to London had left Heathrow Airport before the airline received government's directive for it not to be operated.

According to the statement, the flight continued and landed in Lagos, where all passengers were allowed to disembark.

"Last year the Nigerian government gave British Airways permission to fly three extra services a week, taking the total from one a day to 10 a week.

The Nigerian government wrote to us in March advising that it wished to discuss whether we should continue with the three additional Lagos flights. There has been ongoing discussions with the government since that time over the potential withdrawal of these services.
"Until now, we have had no clarity over whether we should continue to operate or not. As we already had booked passengers booked on the flights are have continued to operate them.

"Yesterday (Wednesday) we received a letter from the government, advising us not to operate the flight. However, the flight had already, departed London.

British Airways have issued the following news to passengers:

A number of British Airways flights have been cancelled to/from Lagos Nigeria. This is due to the uncertainty about the status of our permission to operate this service.

Passengers booked to travel to and from Lagos Nigeria on the services listed below, should contact either British Airways or their travel agency as these flights have now been cancelled.

BA137 on 23 June from London Heathrow to Lagos
BA136 on 24 June from Lagos to London Heathrow
BA137 on 25 June from London Heathrow to Lagos
BA136 on 26 June from Lagos to London Heathrow

I think they want to protect the new Virgin Nigeria...

But anyway, poor BA. It is the only airline in Europe which has restrictions evreywhere despite being in the most competitive market in Europe. AF/KL, LH and the others have it easier...

1- i don't believe BA flew 2 daily flights, they operated 7weekly 747 and 3 weekly 767 upgraded to a 777 then downgraded to a 767 again.
2- VK loads on LGW-LOS are very poor, i doubt that the nigerian gvt giving a hand to VK cause it would have done the same for SAA and EK (as VK LOS-DXB and LOS-JNB are also low)

Western Africa can be such a difficult place to do business - you never know what is going to happen from one moment to the next. Its hard to believe that an airline like BA was operating in violation of the bilateral agreement....this has to do with Virgin Nigeria, an unhappy government official, or something else.

Poor BA? Come on....I have nothing against BA but I have no idea what you are talking about - what restrictions does BA have to deal with that dont effect other EU carriers? On the contrary, BA has the luxury of being in the dominant position at slot controlled LHR and BA benefits in many ways from the Bermuda Two agreement. How do AF/KL or LH have it "easier" than BA?

BA hold a significantly lower percentage of slots at LHR than AF/LH/KL do at CDG/FRA/AMS. AF/LH don't have VS directly competing on their highest yielding routes.
