Ryanair Stansted-Italy

Italy is very much Ryanair territory: it serves 19 destinations in Italy; it has 3 bases there; and has plentiful – and growing – routes to and from. All but 2 of its 19 destinations are served from its main base, namely Stansted. The 2 that aren’t (yet) served are Verona (but Brescia, nearby, is) and Trapani. Now, down to the questions:

1) Given that Hahn has a daily service to Verona and Stansted has a daily service to Brescia, will both Italian destinations coexist or will one cease? If the latter, which? Or do they serve different markets? However, Brescia is marketed at Verona (Brescia), thereby indicating that they’re broadly the same markets;

2) Trapani (which, when it starts, will have a Ryanair flight to Pisa) is very close to Palermo (which has 2x daily flights to Stansted). But is there any potential for a non-stop service from Trapani to Stansted, albeit probably a few times weekly (like from Stansted to, for example, Lamezia)?

3) Catania, on Sicily (like both Palermo and Trapani), did, I believe, have a non-stop Ryanair flight to Stansted (what was its frequency? When did it end)? Air Malta and British Airways now operate from London to Catania, on a four-times-weekly and a daily basis respectively. Surely Ryanair will once again ply the Stansted-Catania route. What was the reason for its cessation? Is it likely that it will return?

4) easyJet currently flies from London to 2 Sardinian destinations: Olbia and Cagilari. Is it likely that Ryanair will ever compete on these routes? It seems less and less likely, given that easyJet must surely be now somewhat established and known thereon.

5) Naples is served by easyJet from Stansted. This Italian city is conspicuously absent from Ryanair’s Italy destination list. Why? Airport fees? No subsidies? What?

6) Rimini was served by Ryanair from Stansted, but it was dropped. Now easyJet flies Luton-Rimini four-times-weekly during the summer. I presume Ryanair operated daily, thereby meaning it had plenty more seats (probable oversupply). Why did Ryanair end this route? If it was because of insufficient yields, how is easyJet performing? Or was it to do with the cessation of a subsidy? Or …?

7) Are there any other Italian destinations, bar the most obvious, namely Naples, Olbia, Cagilari, Catania and Rimini, that could realistically be served by Ryanair from Stansted?

8) What have been the main frequency changes on its Stansted-Italy routes?

Naples is definitely missing in the Ryanair network. I was there last year (on easyJet) and it seems they have quite a few customers there. Large catchment area (Naples alone has more than 1 mio. inhabitants), underserved airport, a lot of inbound tourism as well as a huge amount of VFR-traffic (people from Naples living abroad). Unfortunately not many business customers. But it seems a good location for LCCs.
I guess it's a question of landing taxes.

By the way, there is now a new tax introduced on flights to Sardinia. I don't know if this is only for private flights (up to 4 pax ADDITIONAL environmental fee EUR150, up to 12 pax EUR400 and over 12 pax 1000EUR) but if this is also for scheduled flights then this will mean the end of all easyJet flights there. And I guess Ryanair is not interested in such kind of airports.

How is the slot situation in STN by the way? Is there room to base more aircraft to offer flights to Italy? It might be a problem maybe.

FR started Rimini in 1998 and got various incentives to start the route. In 2000 the airport wanted to alter its deal with FR to make the terms more favourable to themselves. I think you can guess what hapenned next  Wink

I have read somewhere that the nowadays airport of Napoli will become a city airport and a new huge airport will be built in the southern part of the city. Napoli is in fact a large city with 1,5 mln inhabitants, i've never been there but i heard the airport is small for a such city.

Is it true that the airport of Rimini is the airport of the Republic of San Marino?

From what I heard, Naples issued an incentive package for new carriers/new routes from the airport. Among others, SkyEurope and easyJet took advantage of this. Maybe Naples isn't exactly Ryanairs market as it is, even if there is an incentive package, still too expensive?

Maybe. I am quite surprised that an airport which offers an "incentive package" to create more interest would not be willing to negociate further. Nevertheless, I assume the lack of suitable fees, rather than the potential for successful routes, is why FR isn't yet there. I presume that Naples has sufficient capabilities to concurrently handle several 738-sized jets. Who knows what will happen in the future? It seems that there's good potential to and from Naples
