Both CO and DL are looking at VIE.......CO out of EWR and DL out of either JFK or ATL.
The CO service would be with the 752 daily during the summer season and five times per week during the winter.....this would be a long run for the 752 (even with winglets) and CO is still analyzing the operational issues. The westbound segment into EWR during the summer is the biggest problem due to delays encountered due to ATC in the NYC area.
DL would use a 763ER but the question is whether the Vienna route would be into ATL or JFK....my guess would be ATL due to the power of the DL hub at ATL and there is no competition on that route. Didnt DL service VIE in the past?

I find it hard to believe that the only US flagged carrier that flies to VIE is UPS. One would think that DL, CO or AA would be flying here. I would say whoever gets their foot in the door first, CO or DL will clean up on this route. Although if DL gets it, I would think they go from JFK as I really don't see a whole lot of business travel from VIE to other than NY or Washinton DC. The tourists...it dont matter to them if they leave out of ATL or JFK but it does matter to the lucaritive business travelers.

Being the 9th largest city in the European Union, it's absolutely ridiculous that VIE doesn't have more US service. With 1,651,437 people, I can't fathom that there's not at least four dozen or so business travelers a day. And in terms of the cheap seats, I hardly hear anything but American English when walking around Downtown Vienna.

With just over 2 million people in the metro area, Vienna comes in the top 20 of EU cities. It's not a massive aviation market, and so OS services to JFK and IAD pretty well cover demand from VIE to the US.

VIE's strength has been that it was the gateway to Eastern Europe. Since OS is in Star and Skyteam has OK, VIE doesn't hold as much allure as it once did. Besides, DL is serving or has plans to serve a number of cities in Eastern Europe.
I, too would like to see DL serve VIE but I probably would rather see JFK service to ZRH; I'm also intrigued about whether ATL-GVA would work. I wouldn't rule out VIE in the future but those 30 767 conversions can only go so far. DL has grown in S. America, Africa, and Europe using them and I think you will see some of them show up in the Middle East and East Asia. Part of DL's int'l growth strategy has to involving diversification of its route system, something which the 767 is very capable of doing.

I would love to see DL do JFK-ZRH again (it would make my commute easier) but I really don't see it unless AA pulls out after the end of the LX beyond-ZRH codeshares. And even then, I'm not sure they would do it given that ZRH is a terribly expensive and the year-round traffic is not enough to justify given the lack of feed on one end. Even today, AA derives 70-80% of its JFK-ZRH traffic from connecting pax. travelling beyond ZRH on LX codeshares.
