Start Of 787 Asssembly On 6/27/06-Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is June 27th and marks the start of major assembly of the 787. This is a big event for Boeing and the 787 program!!!

Not only will the beginning of the assembly process be exciting, but this little tidbit of info will create quite a bit of buz on the forums also:

"The following month, a converted Boeing 747 with a bulging upper fuselage will be seen in the skies above Seattle as well as Everett's Paine Field."

I cannot wait to see the first plane come together. I often wonder what it must be like to screw together the first pieces on an aircraft. Most likely the shell is assembled then the interior work begins.

I believe the -10 is almost but a sure thing. Airlines wanted extra range with the -10 and how else to do it? Add more wing wich is more fuel...

The -9 had its MTOW increased at the time of the QF order, with that the wing span was increased this 6 feet. B has indicated that the -10 is anticipated to have the same wing span and MTOW as the -9. This will mean the -10 will have a reduced range by about 1,000 nm compared to the -9. But it also means it will have a wicked CASM.

I think the -10 is almost a sure thing as it uses the same engines, wings, gear, etc as the -9. It would be nice to see a future HGW version but the -10 as discussed I would expect to be a big hit with the current oil prices.

Though I don't live near NGO, I bet I can spot one when I am there next month and the month after. One of our other NGO A.netters could get it as well.

Anyone care to estimate some dates for the LCF? The article was written in May. Is everything going okay with this behemoth?

What about the parts from Italy and the US East Coast. What are the dates on those?

A student of mine works in the import division that deals with parts coming from China and Korea. She just started but said it is exciting and very busy.

How is the composite skin being made? I saw a documentary on the stealth fighter, where the thin layer composite skins were pressed to make the skin of the stealth. Is it similiar for the 787? So cool - always good to see a completely innovative aircraft come together.
