I just got a call now from the operations manager of the QUTIO AIRPORT, and he said they wanted me to take some pictures of a sepcial and unique event that would take place today in UIO.
Our soccer team is arriving today, after being disqualified from the world cup, on IBERIA 6635 A343/6. Iberia has been very nice to Ecuador, and proposed a special ceremony for our player onbord the flight. They suggested an escort uppon their arrival, and the president accepted this great idea.
Today, Iberia will be escorted by two MIRAGE F1 from the FAE (AFuerza Aerea Ecutoriana) as soon as it enters the ecuadorian air space. They will do the descent together and then once the A343 lands, the mirages will do a fly by saluting Iberia and the soccer team. I think its a really nice detail from Iberia to have suggested this great idea to congragulate us. Lets hope it all works out nice. And lets hope the arrival time is punctual and there is light when it comes here so I can take pics.
Im trying to talk with IBERIA UIO to suggest that a flyby is done! Making the A340 do a lo pass over the RWY with the mirages escorting and then land and be recieved by firemen. Any way, tthanks IBERIA!

Great idea and we do want pictures when available.

Do the Quito FD still wear their odd pink/fuschia camo? I never quite understood this.
Also, any chance that Edgar Narvaez will organize some sort of parachute drop in conjunction with this. He loves doing that sort of thing but I'm personally not comfortable landing my gear at Quito's altitude. I actually turned down a chance to jump a C-130 into La Carolina with his SF folks.
My loss, although we had a blast jumping into La Noche Amarilla in Guayaquil for Barcelona FC a few weeks later. For those who don't know this is the traditional kick off for the season in Ecuador and is quite the party.
Finally, completely OT, what's the current status of moving UIO out of town. Anything happening? GYE as well.

Will psot pics ASAP, allthough, the plane landed, didnt do the flyby with the mirages, but still, standby for the video in FL350.com, a friend fillmed, the landing which to me, has been one of the closes things to a crash / the plane did increible maneuvers to land the plane, after being to high, came in SO SO SO SO FAST, landed in the half of the RWY, FRONT BUGGIE FIRST, FULL REVERSE in the second half of the RWY which was WET overheating brakes, smoking hot, (LITERALY) and increible. We were in the control tower and aparently the pilot had his finger on the PTT and said "Por poco mas y nos ibamos!" in english " A little bit more and we were gone". With a very relieving, god thanking voice.

That was a very nice gesture by IB and fantastic shots. The mirages look like they had a tough time keeping up with the 340, which is notoriously fast. In picture 1 they are struggling and by the last shot they're just making the threshold and the IB guys are practically at the gate. Finally some proof to dispel the ancient myth!

The good people of GYE root for EMELEC! What the &%^# are you doing something for Barcelona, anyways. . And how come you visited my (now) lovely hometown.
If you want a party in Ecuador, go for New Years day, now thats a party. Or carnival. That is wild.
Unfortunately, Ecuador didnt advance further than it did. But is good to see an improvement from 4 years ago.

Quoting RICARIZA (Reply 7): The only pic I've managed to find is from the fire truck transporting the players throughout Quito:
I see that the fuschia camo is still worn. WTF? I never will understand what they're trying to blend in with.

That's the only game for Barcelona I've ever been to - very nice stadium if nothing else. It was also nice to watch the game from the owner's box. As he also owns a brewery, there were a lot of the beer chick promo types around as well.
I've actually been to many more games with La Nacional - not nearly as nice a stadium but definitely a lot of fun. Look on the bright side, at least I'm not rooting for Liga!

Wow, thanks airportmanager for the pictures... the first one is AWESOME!! the A343 looks great with a mirage "chasing" it.... Also, is the video uploaded yet? it does look like a CRAZY landing by the pilot... maybe he got inspired by the speed of the mirages and wanted to "prove" he can make a very daring maneuver with the A343.... Impressive.. Thanks for the pics....
Also is sad the the Ecuadorian team got eliminated, but they did a good job and made the hearts of many ecuadorians happy for a few days...
Thanks again for the pictures... all are really good!

I was there!!!.
I saw the landing from the waiting area prior to boarding since I was flying back to MAD on that A343 about 90 minutes later.
My view was a bit obstructed by the terminal building structure so I wasn't able to see the wheels touching the rwy. I was only able to see the aircraft starting from the windows and upwards, and I actually remember that I said to the the passenger standing next to me "wow....that one came in fast!!".
About 1 minute later I saw one of IB ground staff members (whose attitude is horrible btw, but I will talk about that on the trip report) talking on the radio and clearly heard when someone said "the aircraft has overheated it's brakes and we could need some fans and water to cool them down".
After the aircraft was parked I was able to see the Ecuadorian players and their coach entering the waiting area (I saw them from about 20 ft/ 6 meters of distance before they went downstairs and out to the ramp to meet the people that were waiting for them there. Oh and the President of Ecuador was also there...I guess his name is Alfredo Palacio, right?.
We had an uneventful flight back to MAD later on EC-HGV thanks to Capt. Jurado and his crew and upon arriving at Barajas we met the Spanish national team which was arriving from Germany after being eliminated in a fair way by France the night before. All the players were silent and looked dissapointed. Anyway, I hate to say this but our team got against France what they deserved. The team's arrival was a sharp contrast when compared to what I had seen in Quito the day before.
Sadly, my camera died about 4 days before coming back to Spain so I was not able to take pics during those days and the flight back...I still remember those magnificent views of Mt. Cotopaxi after takeoff from RWY 17 with the sun almost setting. However, I have some pics of the MAD-UIO leg which I will post on a trip report that I'll write as soon as I have the time.
About Ecuador and the football team, well...congratulations for your remarkable effort. "¡¡Sí se puede!!"
Btw I will miss watching those beauties, Paloma Fiuza and Diana León every night on the TV program/report about the daily world cup matches ("La Tri - Unidos por la Pasión").
Beleive me, I also wanna see that video, but it all depends on Giancarlo Giuliano, if you can, go to Flightlevel350.com and cotnact him and demand it! i will presure . I will beat him if it isnt up by this week.
