Virgin Atlantic has announced non-stop service between London Gatwick and Sir Seewoosagur International Airport in Mauritius. In typical Virgin fashion, the flight has been announced significantly in advance. The 2x weekly (MoFr) 744 service will launch November 2007:

British Airways and Mauritius Air currently fly the route, but both from Heathrow.

Good news. It will be interesting to see what the timings are on these flights. Flights to Mauritius and back have a turnaround time of about 26-27 hours, and that wouldn't really fit in with Virgin's current schedule at Gatwick, where flights typically depart mid morning and get back early the next morning. I'd imagine that another aircraft will be based at LGW, and more routes would be introduced/increased before hand, hence why its been announced 17 months in advance.

Still, great news!

BA used to do a 10 day trip (crew schedule) staying in Seychelles with just one shuttle to Mauritius, it was a holiday. Those were the days!

Now it's 4/5 day Mauritius as there are three flights a week. Still not bad though !

Interesting leisure market for Virgin.....and while Mauritis is a beach market, its generally an expensive beach market. The article mentions Virgin Holidays and hotel packages......I wonder if any other UK based tour operators have agreed to buy blocks of seats on these flights to minimize the risk to Virgin.
