According to FlightAware there was also a 777, an A300 and two 757's (all AA) at RSW. TPA got a 757 and a 738 (also both AA) and PBI got a TACA A320.
A detour is a choice between two tasks, each with its own pros and cons

Worst mistake was having that Virgin pull into E-8...should have held out on a remote stand...the plane sat at E-8 for 3 hours until a tow bar could be driven up from MIA to push the damn thing back! What a beauty that VS A346 is though....gorgeous! The A340 is obviously not a regular visitor to FLL, but Air Transat and Air Canada have brought in A330s before, so I found it surprising that an A330 tow bar which they could have borrowed, wouldn't have fit the A346? Does the A346 require a special tow bar? Just curious...

It was worst than that. First ASIG parked it wrong so they could not get the jetway to the L1 or L2 door. Then when they decided to pull it forward they found the towbar would not fit as the -600's pin is like 3'' thick and the 330/340/777/747 pin is 2.75'' thick. Then after trying a few others they called FedEx and they sent one over to have the same thing happen. So then they call to have -600 towbar sent up from MIA. During all this they can't start fueling as the Jetway isn't hooked up to evac pax in case of a fire. The only airstair that will reach is on the other side of the airport hooked up to the MartinAir MD-11. So after trying one from Jet Blue and Airtran they get one from AA that will reach.
Around this time the $h!t hits the fan...... The F/O comes down saying there will be a bit more of a delay because the Flight Crew has Timed Out and can't fly the FLL-MIA leg and the MIA-LHR crew will is being sent up from MIA. That was around 7:30 and my shift was over.
I would have stayed but I didn't have my Camera. I was so sad because this would have been the shot of a lifetime.
A US Airways E-170 pulling in next a Virgin Atlantic A340-600 with no equipment or jetway on it at FLL with magic hour lighting.

Thought I saw a DC-10 or MD-11 turning final over Weston for 9L from the south around 4:00 pm or so.... looked like it had a red or orange tail- I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I was just going to the mall... should have headed out to the airport with my camera instead. Rats!!

What kind of weather was going on in MIA that made the very close but already crammed FLL a good diversion airport? I know it's Florida so I expect wildly divergent weather within the space of a highway lane but it seems odd.

Reminds me of my days running charters .... Watch out for those combination 737/320 series towbars that don't fit regular 320s.

Summer Thundestorms in South Florida (Florida really) are pretty wild. It can be clear and sunny skies in Downtown Miami and in Southern Miami towards the Kendall Suburbs it can be an all out Severe Thunderstorm. These storms are usually isolated and very tightly packed.

Quoting RICARIZA (Reply 6): Was this the flight to MIA diverted to FLL or the regular daily to FLL?
Hmm. I just checked Flightaware for Avianca departures out of FLL yesterday, and it only shows that single flight, so it could very well have been just the normal flight. Considering I've only seen them fly 752s on that run, I guess it was the unusual 762 that threw me off...

The AV 767 is pretty common here. Shows up at least once a week.
The Martinair was parked over at the Jet Center so it would have been hard to get a shot with out being on the ramp

The MD-11 was neat to see make the approach..I was on Sheridan Street as it was heading East bound right over Sheridan almost like it was circling...Unless it landed 27R.
