Do US airlines still offer dirt cheap last minute fares? I need to fly to denver tomorrow for a friends birthday and with the holiday and all I figured travel wouldnt be that bad, but the fares are still really high!

I think you're thinking of the old stand-by fares which haven't existed since the 80's IIRC. Last minute fares are almost always the most expensive you can buy.
One exception is the "surplus" seats that are sold via the web for each upcoming weekend. Those are posted on Tuesdays or Wednesdays if I'm not mistaken but the choice of destinations is very limited. I still get the emails every week so those still exist.

Its the 4th of July weekend, a major summer holiday. And a big travel holiday. You are pretty much SOL when it comes to a last minute deal. But most airlines have email services with cheapie, last minute, weekend fares. They are city pair specific though.

Quoting Jgold47 (Reply 2): Tuesday or Wednesday...so no 'day before' 200$ coast to coast seat
I'd suggest trying the Low Fare Carriers... you might find something you can live with.
Not sure where you are, but picking a random city in WN's network (CLE in this case) to Denver on tomorrow's date and back on the 2nd of July I found a fare of $299. Only problem was, most of the flights were sold out.
