NON-REV Upgrade On UA For OAL?

I wondered if UA is usually nice to upgrade OAL staff on non-rev like DL often does internationally? I plan to fly them for first time as a non-rev next week internationally on an ID ticket. I will be in a suit to be safe and is UA an ask the gate agent or ask the F/A type airline?

United's planes are so full and they have so many premium frequent flyers wanting/deserving upgrades that it's rare when even a non-rev United employee with years of experience can get an upgrade. As my UA friends tell me, they just love those middle seats near the rear lavs. Ah, the glamour of airline employment.

I non-rev on UA all the time and they are exteremely generous. In fact, I have never had a single experience where I did not get upgraded if there was a seat available in C or F (except for my first time non-reving when I wore jeans (beginners mistake.)) I always make sure to list in F for domestic flights and C for international. I've heard that if you're orginating outside the US, it can be a little more tricky. Good luck!

I worked lots of international gates when UA flew from MIA to Latin America. I personally was never given the "official company policy" about this, but if, after going through the onloading order, I had a C Class seat (3 class aircraft) available for an OA employee, I'd give it to them. (Unless company policy has changed, OA employees cannot travel in F internationally.) I had some co-workers who would do it for Star Alliance staff, but Y for all others (even if a seat was available in C) and yet others who would put all non-UA employees in Y. So bottom line.....it's really up to the gate agent. I have heard though, that it's much more difficult at non-US stations than it is here.

BTW, if you plan on doing any domestic flying on UA, BiCoastal is right. UA planes are very, very full with revenue passengers and Mileage Plus passengers wanting to upgrade. A friend of mine at IAD told me they've been running 99% capacity in the past few days. As a UA employee, I came to expect flying Y class domestically unless I was flying a widebody (rare) or was extremely lucky.

I thought it would be something like that. I hate to break it to you, but in the Summer and other peak travel periods, it really won't make a difference whether it's UA, AA, DL, CO, etc. If you're on an ID50 ticket and Y is all that's left, oh well. Too bad Economy Plus wasn't available; would've been a more comfortable experience at least. Hope it works out better next time.  Smile

What the boarding priority on the ID50s? It may be confirmed but still likey has a lower priority that normal revenue passengers. I fly BP4 confirmed on United each week and we accept that we won't make every single flight if it fills up with BP1, 2 and 3 passengers first. If you're buying a ticket at a discounted rate, it's just the risk that comes with that type of fare . UA treats us OAL VERY well. On two-cabin aircraft we must book in Y, but are always added to the upgrade list. On three cabin aircraft we are able to book C and I have never ever been downgraded.

I know it's confirmed, but we were allowed to bump down ID50 tickets if we were full in F. I would assume this is what happened to you. For the record, UA employees can confirm C Class if travelling positive space on 3 cabin aircraft, but we were allowed to downgrade them if C Class was overbooked; same thing with industry performance/incentive tickets. I'm sorry you had a bad experience but again, it could've happened on any airline.

Just for the record, I didn't buy it, my employer did. Funny thing is there was a Q fare for F available for $700 plus. The value of my ticket was over $1800. While I was being bumped down to Y the cabin was being filled with upgrades? Pretty strange to me????

Correct, you are confirmed. But still, I assume you would be one of the first pax being bumped off when the flight is overbooked.

hmmm first you have to find a stateside UA gate agent with a heart lol...then find one with a personality lol....I work for UA but OMG some of those stateside peeps are so cruel and wicked I really needed some help recently and they could have all had staring roles in the wicked stepmonster in a new disney film lol

I am on by 20 seats, but First and Business are still at about 12/35 on all flights.

Thats why I was concerned a bit

Most of those Business/First seats will be filled once they start upgrading people from Y 72, 48 and 24 hours out depending on the customer's frequent flyer status. Others make last minute upgrade requests the day of departure.

i went and looked at what ual and sq have in place for --biz--(id50)travel.
ual employees travelling on sq --and--v v are good for economy travel only. if sq went and bought you a $1800.00 ticket then they issued it wrong according to the profile.

I think most of the workers in the Airline industry do not fly SQ as a non-rev.

They have the worst agreements even within Star Alliance as well.

an ID75 or lower on SQ is useless on long haul flights. usually more than a confirmed discount ticket you can find on the internet.

I can tell you right now that INTL flights are going to be hard for nrsa upgrade for non-ua. At international stations, especially NRT agents, they are very strict and by the book. Domestic is another story though. Good luck.

Even if the ID50 is confirmed, you are still subject to offload and/or downgrade if the flight is overbooked. It's still an ID ticket.

In principle, ID00s/ID90s should be offloaded first, then ID75/AD75s and then ID50/AD50s, but not all gate agents realise that ID50s are more expensive than ID90/75... they just lump all ID travellers together regardless of fare, ID level and the employer.

If you/your employer booked (paid for) an ID50 in F class and you travel in J or Y, you should get a receipt from the agent showing you were downgraded so you/your employer can recollect the fare different between fare paid and fare for class travelled.

Thats one main reason I am considering flying out 1st choice on UA to BKK from the USA than my back up tickets on TG/CX/NH/EK etc. cause flying a US flag carrier increases possible chances of upgrading on OAL compared to an International carrier. Cause most flights are sold out during the summer and sometimes J/F is only class left even after all revenue upgrades and most Asian airlines wont bother putting you in J/C/F at all if Y was full, regardless of you wearing a nice suit and behaving.

Star the best they can get is C, but everything is so doggone full. Even members of the UA family (UAX) can barely even get on. OAL carriers can only get Y on the passes. Unfortuantely it is part of the game.
