My favorite of all time were AA's "The On-Time Machine" commercials.
Worked for too many airlines to list. Banktupcy after bankruptcy after bankruptcy.

That 1978 TWA L-1011 ad was very 1970s... but I bet that Trans World's "delicious steak" in coach was as tough as shoe leather and tasted just as good, too.
I've had some fave airline commercials, too, over the years. Some of mine include:
-Southwest's "Sick of Your Job/Wanna Get Away?" ad with the "Pink Slip Virus!" (1998)... very funny.
-American's "Engine/Way of Life" ads (2002)... I wish that this campaign was still running.
-America West's "Mosh Pit" (1996) ad was funny, too. (As much as I luv WN, I still hate open seating... let's hope that WN's assigned seating test succeeds.)
But, my fave of all time has to be Delta's "Adiemus/On Top of the World" ads (which debuted in the US during the 1996 Summer Olympics). Nothing beats the ad where the balloons fly in and over the MD-11 in that Atlanta hangar. (Oddly enough, Thierry Mugler used "Adiemus" in a TV ad for their "Cologne" fragrance in 2001, four years after the DL ads ended in the US.)

Are you talking about the series of three - "Ramp Service" (late bag being run to a departing flight) "Important" ("Even the most junior mechanic..."), and "Farewell" (highlighting maintenance through the eyes of a 36-year employee) or is there a different series that I missed?
That series is some of my favorite airline advertising...wish AA would have stuck with tose instead of the scary big-brother-esque "We Know Why You Fly".

Wow... I don't think I've ever seen those before, but they highlight everything I love about aviation. Kind of moving/stiring, as well.
Give the long tradition of great (or at least good) AAdvertising American had built up, one really wonders why they thought creeping customers out was a good idea.
Yeah, they say "California....It's the cheese" ... I love that ad partially because of how generic it is; it would take at most 7 edits to turn that into a commercial for any airline [Watch it again, and anytime you hear or see the letters "PSA" insert "Delta" or "Continental" or "United" or "American"

In regards to AA's current ads, I saw a CO ad in NY last December that said "Why you fly is your business. Our business is getting you there."
I too agree that the "We know why you fly" campaign is not nearly as good as any of the aforementioned commercials. However, if the current campaign compels more people to fly American than past campaigns, then it works.

Perhaps someone can find the Aer Lingus TV spot from the 80's featuring the 747- that was pretty cool for its day- all I can remember is great music and an amazing sunrise/set that you could see through the aircraft from the far side

One of my favorites is an ANA one where the presenter is Frank Sinatra. Yes olf Blue eyes himself. There are many famous people who will do commercials in Japan but not in their home country.

Love those adverts! I just whish I was around in those retro days of Aviation, so much new innovative aircraft that all had their own individual characteristics. Nowadays all aircraft are getting too similar.
