Was just wondering if anyone had any updates on the new airport in Bangkok. I believe it was due to open soon but has been delayed a bit.

Any information appreciated.

According to a press release by ATI on 21 June, there will be some test commercial flights on 29 July to test airport systems, and the airport's full opening will be on 28 September.

Operations on 29 July will be by 6 carriers: Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, PB Air, Orient Thai, Thai AirAsia and Thai Airways. Rumoured to be 24 flights total to depart on the 29th.

I didn't realise things were so behind schedule. Though I'm not surprised.

What happens to the current airport when the new facilities become full operational?

I was wondering about that - had heard that Don Muang would be retained as a domestic airport.

Well it shouldnt be long now. I was reading a recent Time magizine in which Thai had an advertisment. This advert had a picture of the cool looking terminal. Also the terminal's roof line was encorperated into Bangkok's new coprate logo.

I have a ticket for the OrientThai flight on July 29th from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi and return as part of the testing of the new airport. Will post a trip report shortly thereafter.

Local papers are saying all flights wil move to the new airport effective September 28th, although I caught an interesting quote from this morning's Bangkok Post in which one of the transportation ministry officials referred to the "soft opening" on September 28th.

Don't know if that was a slip up, or just an inaccurate quote, but it leads me to wonder if there will be more news about the actual opening date.

Of course, it has only been four decades in the making...
