Did little research on AMA - Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. Rick Husband himself was NASA astronaut on space shuttle Columbia that broke up inflight across the state of Texas before landing on February 1, 2003. Rick Husband was born in Amarillo and attended Amarillo High School.

Interesting airport overview photo of AMA:

I counted on the *high* side, 33 departures max. Nowhere close to 71 departures.

That aside, congratulations on the rebuild. It will definitely be a good thing for the city of Amarillo.

Lots of West Texas airports seem to be upgrading their facilities nowadays ... MAF got a new terminal a few years back, and ABI just finished a major upgrade of its terminal.

I'm glad AMA will be upgrading -- it desperately needed it. LBB seems much bigger, but of course, half its gates are sitting empty.

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

Seems a bit ambitious, with not too many carriers clammering to serve the Texas Panhandle. But maybe this will spur them to come in.

Now I would have liked to have been there when AA,CO,DL,BN,TI were all flying big jets there.

Will it be built next to current, then tear down the current terminal?

Oh, forgot TW as well to list.

You sure are lucky to rebuilding your own airport, did you get the refinance loand on lendingtree.com?
Is it a 15/20 or 30 year loan?
Interest rate...5.5, 5.675?

I have only been to AMA once, about 12-13 years ago, it needed an update then.....congrats on the project!

I guess LBB's terminal just seems bigger -- empty, but bigger.

How many gates are currently used at AMA? I would assume fewer than at LBB, since AMA doesn't have as many WN flights. Of course, they do have Great Lakes serving AMA.

i think 11 , since the west wing isnt in use at all. but Great lakes doesnt add much to us, since they only operate one gate. but seriously, its not like the isntant one flight leaves they post the next flight from that gate. id say LBB and AMA are about the same size overall, LBB may be a tad bigger, ill look into it.

Last time I talked with Shannon, she said it's being narrowed to 200 ft...  Sad I used to joke with her that us Cessna drivers could use it as 3 parrallel runways at it's 300 ft. width  Wink

One of the coolest things I ever saw was when a friend of mine and I were flying from ELP to OSH and stopped at AMA for fuel in a Cessna 210. The tower told us to hold short for closed traffic when we were ready to go, and a B-1B bomber proceeds to do a touch 'n go right in front of us. Never seen so much tire smoke in my life  cloudnine

Garri,

Will this be an entirely new terminal, or a rebuild of the old one? If it will be an entirely new terminal, the current one will become a candidate for the Old and Abandoned Airport Terminals website:

http://oldterminals.topcities.com

The prior Amarillo terminal, used until 1971, already has a page at the site:

http://oldterminals.topcities.com/amarillo.html

If the current terminal is going to be abandoned for air service or demolished, and you're in Amarillo r/t Germany, you might want to get pictures of it while it's still in use. (If security will allow you to do that) The site also welcomes information, and scans of maps, old photos or postcards that might be out there.

Jim

Hi Shannon,

I'd imagine that Military charters also occasionally use the gates, too, as happens quite often in ELP (due to Ft. Bliss), as Pantex is located in AMA. Is this the case?
