Coming back from my family reunion in NC, I will be flying out of PHF and I have never been there. What should I expect? How many gates are there? Are there a lot of things to do while waiting for our flight out?
Is the terminal layout one that is easy to navigate?
ANY information will be helpful

This is my first-ever post on A.net, so I'm trying!
Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, PHF, is a nice airport that is pretty easy to navigate. The check-in counters are all in one line on the right side of the main terminal, just as you walk in the front of the airport. There is only one way in and out of the single wing of the terminal, a wide, glass-enclosed walkway that offers good views of the surrounding tarmac. Inside, there is a place to eat called the Blue Skies Cafe, along with a pub (I think its still there, as they've redone much of the airport's interior). I'm not sure if it's there yet, but there is also supposed to be a Hudson News stand being installed. Security should be quick, but even if there is a line, it backs up into the glass walkway where you can see part of the tarmac. Once you get to the gates, the area is surrounded by windows, so you can see quite a bit of activity. The one downside to the airport is that if you have a rental car, you have to drop it off a good distance away, and walk up a steep, uncovered sidewalk to the terminal.
If you get to the airport a long time before your flight leaves, you can do some planespotting around the area. If you drive on the road right past where the old ATC tower is (the new one sticks out like a sore thumb), and also the old terminal now used by Hampton University, you can get really close to where the Airtran gates are. Also, if you are approaching the road from Jefferson Ave., you can turn right onto a road called "G" Avenue at a stoplight. This road takes you right past the new ATC tower. If you follow that road to the end, it will take you to the Smithfield Foods aircraft hangar, along with the Noland (I think) hangar. From there, you can see the threshold's of Runways 7 and 2 well and planes taking off from Runways 25 and 20.
Just a little more info on PHF: Airtran, Delta (and its regional carriers), and US Airways express all have regular commercial operations. Airtran flies both 73Gs and 717s in here, Delta flies MD-88s, CRJs, and E145s, and US Airways Express flies a mix of DH8s, CRJs, and E145s. There are either 5 or 6 actual jetways, and more airline parking spots by the terminal. There is also a lot of corporate traffic.
Hope this helps, and enjoy your flight!
