There were some in Nigeria, although these were grounded in 2002, after a couple of accidents due to bad maintenance. According to wikipedia (gotta be true!) there are still some flying in Africa - probably in the Congo. There are also corporate versions still flying.

The last British registered 1-11 flew on 31 March 2002.

As for the remaining world wide fleet, the majority of surviving aircraft were being operated in Nigeria until May 2002. Sadly a crash brought an abrupt end to operations and the entire fleet was grounded.

Other operators who continued to operate the aircraft into the 21st century included Nationwide Airlines of South Africa, Aero Asia of Pakistan, and a host of other small airlines in third world countries. Most are now in storage and probably won't fly again.

About 12 executive aircraft remain in service with 7 having been stage three hushkitted. As of June 2006 my latest guess is that less than 10 actually remain in service and many of these only fly occasionally.

I was in BWI a couple of weeks ago, and two 1-11's with strange noses departed within 5 minutes of each other. It was fantastic to see the spey's spew out the black emmissions, reminds me of the days living near Manchester in England.

Easy to miss. I've got new specs and too much time on my hands!

I was thinking that maybe the optional wing idea could be a good way for FR to reduce weight further.....?

I grew up listening to 1-11s as they appeared over the pennines above my house. Those Speys made a very distinctive and hollow sound, which I can still 'hear' today.

Here is some update on BAC 1-11 fleets

Business Jet Services N999BW Stage 3 Hushkitted.
The aircraft has just come to the end of a very comprehensive refurbishment. Its flightdeck has been upgraded with the installation of a glass cocokpit and it is currently being repsprayed. It will shortly return to service after nearly a year!

Grupo Adelac XA-ADC
The aircraft is being kept busy flying out of its base at Toluca, Mexico. I have been told that it flies up to three times a week.

GST Aero UN-B1111
It was reported that this airframe returned to service at the beginning of this year after a period of storage and an overhaul at Bucharest Otopeni. It is based at Alamaty. No sightings have yet been recorded.

Kori Air N789CF
I've been told that this aircraft does fly occasionally in the USA but no reported sightings or images of it have been given to me so far. In fact I've only ever seen one image of this aircraft!

Libavia 5A-DKO
Another airframe that was supposedly returned to service earlier this year from Bucharest Otopeni after a period of storage and overhaul. Once again no one has confirmed this to me yet and it has not been seen.

Libyan Arab Airlines 5A-DDQ
It was seen in service in Tripoli late last year but is rarely seen other than when it goes into Malta for its maintenance.

JetEx Flight Support / MIA Airlines YR-CJL, YR-HRS, YR-MIA, P4-CBH
The largest remaining 1-11 operator with six aircraft in the fleet although only four are in service. The three Romanian registered aircraft are stage three hushkitted, These are the last three civil registered 1-11s still allowed to fly in Europe! The fourth aircraft P4-CBH is normally based in Africa

Northrop Grumman N161NG, N162W, N164W
These airframes are all used as testbeds for various radar installations. Testing is currently been carried out with the JSF radar system.

QinetiQ ZE432, ZE433, ZH763
All of these aircraft are active from their Boscombe Down base. ZE432 still flies with the ETPS while ZE433 is involved with Eurofighter radar trials. ZH763 carries out all sorts of electronic missions.

Romavia YR-BRE, YR-BRI
Both these aircraft were kept busy until recently. YR-BRE has been on "government duty" for the past few years, but it seems to have been replaced by a BAe146. YR-BRI was carrying out regular trooping flights. Neither aircraft have been sighted or photographed away from their Otopeni base for sometime now.

These BJ 1-11s were apparently sold recently to a proud new owner. The small print in the listing includes a Stage II compliance.

Even though this was taken over a year ago , I beleive this aircraft is performing regular service for Wimbi Dira and I have seen it at JNB earlier this year.

What routes / frequency does it serve? It would be worth a jaunt to catch a ride on it.

I'm gutted this week because I am in Sudan but do not have a spare day to catch a ride on one of the YAK-42s or AN-26s operating domestic services here before I go back to AUH - gutted!

No BAC 1-11s here, though, it seems...

The BAC 1-11 actually belongs to I.T.A.B (International Trans Air Business) which is blacklisted by the EU. It flies occasionally to JNB on behalf on Wimbi Dira from Lumbamashi and Kinshasa. I'm not sure about I.T.A.B's services as I can't find a website.

Heres a link to Wimbi Dira's website , quite interesting.

They still fly scheduled pax DC-3 flights...
