With the start of the W06/07 timetable (eff 29th October 06), Egyptair will significantly boost their schedule on the Cairo (CAI) - Aswan (ASW) domestic route from 4 to 7 daily flights. This represents a whopping 75% increase in flights on the route in time for the peak winter travel season to 'Upper Egypt'. Flights will be operated with a mixture of B735s, A320s and A321s.
In addition Aswan (ASW) - Abu Simbel (ABS) flights will go up from 3 to 4 daily flights as one of the new CAI-ASW flights (MS145/146) will continue onto ABS.
The population of Aswan and the surrounding area is the 3rd largest in the country (after Cairo and Alexandria) and the southern region of the country has most of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaonic sites and relics as well as the famous Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser. The increase will mainly cater for the influx in tourist numbers expected over the 'cooler' winter months (and hence the flight times available).

Regarding this increase, even though Egypt is a year round destination, for the southern areas of Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Thebes, Edfu, Esna, etc the winter months are when significant tourist numbers visit the Pharaonic sites (summer temperatures easily hit 50°C+).
Since Summer04 Egyptair have operated 4x daily CAI-ASW flights during the summer and 5x daily in the winter, so this latest increase will cater for the expected higher demand.
In 2005 LXR handled 2.1 million passengers and ASW handled 1.1 million passengers, 7.2% and 4.1% respectively higher than 2004.
Here are some figures for LXR and ASW for 2005:
Luxor (LXR)
Domestic Non-Scheduled: 472,576 Domestic Scheduled: 517,837 International Charters: 894,845 International Scheduled: 220,475
Aswan (ASW)
Domestic Non-Scheduled: 503,558 Domestic Scheduled: 513,109 International Charters: 88,868 International Scheduled: 3,390
The 'Domestic Scheduled' figures are Egyptair's figures (as they're the only domestic scheduled operator). So Egyptair handle over half a million domestic passengers out of both airports which is quite significant (especially for ASW). Egyptair's domestic destinations out of LXR are CAI, ASW and SSH, while out of ASW they serve CAI and ABS.
However I must mention that Air Memphis controls the ASW-ABS-ASW market with their 'scheduled charter flights'. In fact Air Memphis's ASW-ABS-ASW schedule overshadows MS's 4x daily flights. They have 4 flights on a Monday, 6 on a Tuesday, 9 on a Wednesday, 12 on a Thursday and 15 on a Friday! You can actually book on these flights directly with them. http://www.air-memphis.com/

It is true that Southern Egypt is hot in the summer but if you are not under direct sunlight you don't feel the heat cause the weather is very dry in upper Egypt , on the other hand the temperature might be a lot less in Alexandria but because of its humid weather some days become unbearable in the summer ( Years back i spent 14 days in a camp in Menya in the middle of the summer and it was gorgeous )
I hope the arrival of the new B738's will help MS to expand both domestic and international network .

I remmber the last time i went there that was like 10 years ago maybe littel more and it was amazing if though it was really so hot.
I can't forget that time because that was my first time into a B737 flight deck
I was with my dad in the route ASW-ABS-ASW-LXR-CAI and in the leg ABS-ASW after boarding i heared my name being called and asking me to come upfront, i went there and there was the senior flight attendant who greeted me and ask me if my dad is such and such and that my dad told him that i love flying so he Asked the pilot if i can be in the flight deck for this leg, man tell you it was the most amazing moments in my life. wish i can do that again one day

I much prefer Alex in the summer. The atmosphere is great even if it does get a tad hot. In the winter it's a bit too quiet, cold and not as lively.

True. It's difficult to predict how the latest escalation will impact the Egyptian tourism industry. Egypt's far enough from the 'problem area' to allow for a safe holiday but it might be seen as too close for comfort for European tourists. Having said that most tourists visiting Egypt in the summer are Arabs from the Gulf region. Traditionally Egypt and Beirut have been the summer holiday hot spots for Gulf Arabs, but with the situation in Lebanon (which I hope is resolved a.s.a.p) Egypt is expected to get more tourists. Airline wise, for example, Air Arabia are offering passengers booked on flights to Beirut, to change their destinations to Egypt (ALY, SSH, LXR, ATZ) and Turkey (SAW) - Source. And by the way I know it's awful to benefit from other people's misfortune, so I'm not thrilled at all at the reason behind this expected increase.
Just to add, regarding the current problem, Egyptair have cancelled BEY flights (obviously) as well as TLV flights (operated by Air Sinai). Egyptair's daily CAI-DAM flights (MS721/722) have been upgraded from the normal mixture of A320/B735 flights to the B777 to aid the evacuation and compensate for the cancellation of BEY services.

What aircraft did you fly on? I assume it was a mixture of A320s, A321s or B735s.

This is the winter schedule.
I recall last year trying to book seats in Feb and being unable to obtain the flights that I wanted. I did get flights on a different day, but they were pretty full.
IMO the key point here is that there is little internal competition.
Given the choice between a 1 hr flight, and 3 hrs drive across the desert in a convoy, then the smart money flies.

I remember you said you flew on the AB6. Was it on the CAI-ASW route or another route?
Quoting Bennett123 (Reply 11): IMO the key point here is that there is little internal competition.
The Egyptian government wants/wanted Egyptair to have a strong hold on the domestic and Middle Eastern market ex-CAI. Things are changing though. Both http://www.sunair-eg.com/ and http://www.air-memphis.com/ operate regular, internal, bookable flights (i.e. not the normal package tour flight previously allowed). Full liberalisation is predicted in late 2007 / early 2008.

True. Taking a coach, IMO, can be difficult when travelling through the desert even if air conditioned. On the other hand the internal train system in Egypt is a very good (and cheaper) alternative (albeit some trains are a tad old).

the problem in the 1 hour flight is what it would take to get to and from the airport and the waiting time and if there is delays, don't get me wrong i would definitely take the flight not just because of the time but because like most of us I love Flying
Quoting Horus (Reply 12): On the other hand the internal train system in Egypt is a very good (and cheaper) alternative (albeit some trains are a tad old).
that's true the train system is getting better in Egypt, cheaper (Yes), Clean i would say depend on the train you traveling on.

Yes, the website notice is a little inaccurate (typical). Rather than operate the usual DAM B735/A320 service plus the BEY A320 service, they've upgraded the DAM flight to the B777 (F class seats are reserved for C class passengers with full fare tickets). The twice weekly CAI-ALP-CAI B735 flights remain unchanged but are heavily overbooked until 03Aug06.

I've only tried the Cairo-Alexandria train service and was really impressed by the spot on puntuality and onboard service.
There were a couple of 737s in the row when we came back to CAI.
Thanks. I thought so as the A320 and B735 seem to operate the vast majority of CAI-ASW and ASW-ABS flights.
