When Did AA Start SAT-LAX?

Just noticed this -- when trying to book DFW-LAX on AA, they gave me a DFW-SAT-LAX routing. When did AA introduce this non-stop SAT-LAX flight? Is this due to their success on the AUS-LAX route? Or a response to UA's influx of RJs at SAT?

It was added in December 2005 and was more to show American's commitement to the Texas region (in other words "look how committed we are, don't get rid of Wright") than anything else. However, new found demand for F traffic on the route thanks to Toyota was another motivating force.

Actually, it was a response to UA's addition of SAT-LAX, which came before the mini-hub started.

So, anyone know how the loads are for AA's flights? For my travel dates, DFW-SAT-LAX was selling for $236 R/T, while DFW-LAX nonstop was $278 R/T.

Of course, you have direct competition with WN on SAT-LAX.

No, it wasn't. Those two routes started more than half a year before AA launched it. I don't blame you for thinking it since nowadays everything is a "response", but UA's entry into the market was not a major contributing factor.

Oops, you're right. Sorry about that. Looks like UA announced SAT-LAX on January 26, 2005 for service starting April 3, 2005. AA announced SAT-LAX on September 1, 2005 for service starting October 30, 2005.

Prior to UA/AA on the route, CO used to fly SAT-LAX. I know that the flight was up as late as 2001 -- my partner took that flight on a trip home once.

Did CO have a focus city at LAX at that point?

You're right, CO did operate SAT-LAX for quite a while. They also operated SAT-MEX until about that same time frame. I think they were some of the few non-hub domestic routes that CO flew at the time.

I don't think CO had a focus city in LAX at that time. I don't even know when was the last time they tried to make LAX an actual focus city. CO launched service to SAT almost at the same time that AA relaunched LAX-AUS (AA tried it for a few months then discontinued before bringing it back and making it permanent) so not sure if it was just a way to protect part of their(CO) Texas turf.

Also the LAX-SAT-LAX departure times have been moved around three times since it was launched. Not sure of what this means, obviously they're trying to accomodate certain "requests" from some premium flyers.
