From the French Lebanese newspaper, L'Orient le Jour:

TRANSPORT

Summary:

8 firm orders of 4 narrowbody aircraft and 4 widebody aircraft plus 4 options.

Deliveries would start in 2007.

My guess is an order for 4 A320s and 4 A330s, but we'll see.

MEA currently operates 9 aircraft, 6 A321-200s and 3 A330-200s.

If MEA firms up its 4 options, they will have a total of 21 aircraft in a few years.

They are also currently evaluating regional jets.

They have been in negotiations with Boeing over the 787 over the past summer.

interesting indeed....but adding 8 planes in one shot...that's like almost doubling the fleet...where's the demand coming from all of a sudden?

I kind of wonder where they would deploy these aircarft to (especially the widebodies - A330s?)

MEA is going to become a SkyTeam associate member next year and they have to expand their fleet to increase frequencies on their routes if they wish to be of value to SkyTeam.

Also, MEA has ambitions to become a full member and that means they need to become bigger. They finally realized that.

Where from is a better question today.

According to rumors, there are at least 2 A319s in the narrowbody order.

Also, all 3 current A330s will be returned in favor of 4 new A330s. The new A330s will have different configuration than the current ones.

Wasn't there talk of a possible E195 order by MEA ?

I would guess 4 E195 and 4 A330s.

I am afraid this won't happen for a while as Israel has bombed Beriut airport. While they will be using Cyprus, Damascus airports in the meantime, they won't be able to use BEY for the forseeable future.

Indeed, Cyprus press reports today that MEA planes will be using LCA as their temporary base until the problems in the area are sorted out.

During this time, maintenance will be carried out by Cyprus Airways Engineering.

They need them as the rest of their fleet lies buggered at BEY!

I believe they have got 5 aircraft (A321) out of Beirut. Not sure but I assume the A330s are still stuck?

why not A340-500 or A340-600 since they plan on flying to Canda, Brazil and hopefully the US? I would even consider the B787 since now lebanon is a friend of the US.
