Continental Airlines has converted two 767-400 deliveries scheduled for 2004 into two firm orders for the 777-224ER, for delivery in 2002, a clean sign of
the airline's commitment to add transpacific service as per the press release
Continental will also add more 737-800's to the existing fleet of 52 738's.
At the end of this year, Continental will have four 767-400's and three 767
200 ER's in service.

The issue of whether the 777-224ER can operate such a long distance flight (Newark to Hong Kong) has been discussed at length a few weeks ago when
the airline announced the route.
The conventional theory is that the airline would basically need to dedicate
two triple sevens to the route given the distance, time, and length of the
flight and the turnaround schedule. That seemed to be a pressing issue.
The 777-224ER will be able to operate nonstop from EWR to CLK. However,
with very little if any cargo and special fuel tanks retrofitted.
